Colligative Property Freezing Point Depression

1. The document describes an experiment to observe the effect of salt on the freezing point of water. 2. Three samples were prepared - pure water, water with 1 tbsp salt, and water with 2 tbsp salt - and their freezing times were recorded over 13.5 hours. 3. The results showed that pure water froze fastest at 5 hours, while the salt solutions took longer to freeze - 12 hours for 1 tbsp salt and 13.5 hours for 2 tbsp salt. The greater the amount of salt, the lower the freezing point and the longer freezing took.

SCI ED 4 – ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Name: Date: September 14, 2020

Course & Block: BSED Science 2B

Colligative Property: Freezing Point Depression

Objective/s:
To identify the which freezes faster
To compare the difference between frozen pure water and frozen solution of salt and water
To identify if the salt will have an effect on freezing process
To identify if the amount of salt will have an effect on freezing process
To find out the freezing point and time of three

Materials:

 3 plastic ice bags

 Water
 Salt
 Measuring spoon/ 1tbsp.
 Measuring cup
 Marker

Timer Procedure:
1. Measure 1 cup of water and place in one
ice bag.
2. Measure 1 cup of water then add 1
tablespoon of salt. Dissolve completely the
salt in the water before putting the solution
in the second ice bag.
3. Measure 1 cup of water then add 2
tablespoons of salt. Dissolve completely
the salt in water before putting the solution
in the third ice bag.
4. Label the three ice bags properly before placing inside the freezer.
5. Observe what happens every 15 minutes.
6. Record your observation.

Discussion
The pure water freezes faster than water with salt. The pure water freezes at 3:01 PM for
about 5hrs. duration while the water with 1 tbsp. of salt freezes at 10:16 PM with 12hrs and
the water with 2 tbsp. of salt freezes at 11:46 PM with13.5hrs. duration. The water with 1
tbsp. salt freezes faster than the water with 2 tbsp. of salt.
Conclusion:
From this experiment, we may conclude that the pure water freezes faster than the
water with salt because pure water freezes at 0°C (32°F) while salt water needs to be colder
before it freezes and so it usually takes longer to freeze.  Also the amount of salt has an effect
on freezing because when more salt added in the water it lowers the freezing point of the water.
