 EQ: ability to understand, use, manage your emotions in a positive way to:
o relieve stress
o communicate effectively
o empathize with others
o overcome challenges
o defuse conflict
o build stronger relationships
o succeed academically/professionally
o achieve goals
o make informed decisions
 EQ defined by 4 attributes:
o Self-Management: control impulsive feelings, emotions, behavior, adapt to changing
circumstances
o Self-Awareness: recognize your emotions that affect your thoughts & behavior, know your
strengths, weaknesses and have confidence
o Social-Awareness: have empathy, understand emotions, needs of others
o Relationship Management: develop & maintain good relationships, communicate clearly,
inspire & influence others, work well in a team, manage conflict
 Importance:
o Your performance at school/work: lead & motivate others, gauging candidates, navigate
through social complexities
o Your physical health: not managing emotions -> not managing stress, high BP, low
immune system, heart diseases, speeds up aging process
o You mental health: makes you vulnerable to anxiety & depression, oversensitivity
o Your relationships: can’t develop, feel lonely and isolated
o Your social intelligence: knowing your emotions serves a social purpose, connects you to
others, helps you recognize friend from foe, measure another person’s interest in you

Signs of High Emotional Intelligence:

1. They handle criticism without denial, blame, excuses or anxiety


2. They're open-minded
3. They're good listeners
4. They don't sugarcoat the truth
5. They apologize when they're wrong
6. Being able to say no when you need to.
7. Being able to share your feelings with others.
8. Having empathy for other people
9. Not being judgmental of others
