Asynchronous Task 4 Prelims

The document provides instructions for an art assignment requiring students to analyze examples of representational and non-representational artworks. For the representational portion, students are to analyze Paul Cezanne's 1895 painting "Ginger Jar" focusing on general information about the artwork and providing a brief description. For the non-representational portion, students analyze Charles Demuth's 1917 work "Bermuda Landscape No. 1", again addressing general details and briefly describing what the artwork looks like. The assignment aims to demonstrate students' understanding of representational versus non-representational art.

Asynchronous Task 4 Prelims

Non/Representational: Postcard Series

Mechanics:
• Postcards have many uses and they are not only used to write to a loved
one or a friend. It is true; postcards are used to write to a friend or family
member from a vacation. They can also be used to see a distant place
that someone would want to go to. Postcards, in that sense, can be used
as advertisement.
• For this course, you will be doing postcards to demonstrate your
understanding and appreciation of our current lesson in Art for the week.
This week, the theme is: REPRESENTATIONAL VS NON-REPRESENTATIONAL
ART.

A. REPRESENTATIONAL ART (20 points)

1. You must look for any REPRESENTATIONAL ABSTRACT ARTWORK online and
paste the artwork on the box provided.

2. Accomplish the analysis worksheet using online sources. PARAPHRASE and

CITE YOUR SOURCES.

PART 1: GENERAL INFORMATION

1. SOURCE (book or link): In many cases, this information can be found on a label or in a
gallery guidebook. There may be an artist’s statement available in the gallery. If so, indicate
in your text or by a footnote or endnote to your paper where you got the information.
https://collection.barnesfoundation.org/objects/7001/Ginger-Jar-(Pot-de-gingembre)/

2. SUBJECT MATTER: Who or what is represented?

Fruits, Table, table cloth and ginger jar.
https://collection.barnesfoundation.org/objects/7001/Ginger-Jar-(Pot-de-gingembre)/

3. ARTIST OR ARCHITECT: What person or group made it? Often this is not known. If there is
a name, refer to this person as the artist or architect, not “author.” Refer to this person by
their last name, not familiarly by their first name.
The creator is Artist Cézanne.
https://collection.barnesfoundation.org/objects/7001/Ginger-Jar-(Pot-de-gingembre)/

4. DATE: When was it made? Is it a copy of something older? Was it made before or after
other similar works?
It was created in 1895, and the artist used similar painting styles but with a
different content/subject. He likes using fruits as his subject.
https://collection.barnesfoundation.org/objects/7001/Ginger-Jar-(Pot-de-gingembre)/

5. PROVENANCE: Where was it made? For whom? Is it typical of the art of a geographical
area?
The artist made it in France. Cézanne had always struggled to get along with
others, and after the death of his mother in 1897, he gradually withdrew from
his wife and his childhood friends. He said “the landscape becomes human,
becomes a thinking, living being within me. I become one with my
picture.…We merge in an iridescent chaos.”

6. LOCATION: Where is the work of art now? Where was it originally located? Does the
viewer look up at it, or down at it? If it is not in its original location, does the viewer see it as
the artist intended? Can it be seen on all sides, or just on one?
It is on display at The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania.
https://collection.barnesfoundation.org/objects/7001/Ginger-Jar-(Pot-de-gingembre)/

7. TECHNIQUE AND MEDIUM: What materials is it made of? How was it executed? How big
or small is it?
Oil on canvas, overall dimensions: 28 15/16 in. x 23 13/16 in. (73.5 cm x 60.5 cm)

PART 2: BRIEF DESCRIPTION

In a few sentences describe the work. What does it look like? Is it a representation of
something? Tell what is shown. Is it an abstraction of something? Tell what the subject is and
what aspects are emphasized. Is it a non-objective work? Tell what elements are dominant.
This section is NOT an analysis of the work yet. This section is primarily a few sentences to
give the reader a sense of what the work looks like. Use 6-7 sentences only.

Colors, yellow red, a mix of the two, and greens with a slight amount of
darkness around the subject are what I see. The subjects are surrounded by a
blank space but because of the geometric pattern displayed, it isn't
completely empty. The background seems to look a rock like texture. Fruits, jar,
and tablecloth appear to be floating.

B. NOREPRESENTATIONAL ART (20 points)

1. You must look for any NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ABSTRACT ARTWORK online
and paste the artwork on the box provided.

2. Accomplish the analysis worksheet using online sources. PARAPHRASE and

CITE YOUR SOURCES.

Pastel colors and light tones of color are used by the artists. I also notice that
there is a lot of space between each line and around the "subjects." This
artwork contains both curved and very straight lines. Rounds with sharpened
edges. Some parts have a cloud-like texture. It appears to be an uneven
puzzle.
