Sheet 1

This document provides an overview of steel sections used in building construction. It covers hot rolled sections, which are easier to produce and shape but require high-temperature processing, as well as common hot rolled sections like I-beams, channels, tees, hollow sections, angles, and flats. It also discusses cold rolled sections, which are lighter alternatives to hot rolled sections. Compound sections are produced by welding standard sections together to create customized profiles. Finally, it introduces open web beams, which are suited for long spans with light to moderate loads and have voids cut into the web to reduce weight.

Steel

◎ Most popular and effective building

Material
◎ An alloy made by combination of Iron
(Fe) and other elements, the most
common of these being Carbon (C). Symbol of Steel in
section
◎ Carbon Content: 0.15% to 1.50%
◎ Increase in carbon content: Increase
strength, decrease in ductility

Hot Rolled Sections

6
Hot Rolled Sections

 Easier to make, to shape and form.

 Has its source in a mill process involving
rolling the steel at high temperature.
 Starts from a piece of still billet which is
heated up 926°C and then the steel is rolled
through the mill into the particular shape.
 The whole process is done at high
temperature and at the end is being cooled
down and tolerances are not essential.

Rolled Steel Beam Sections (I-Sections )

◎ I-sections are used as beams and

columns.
◎ About 80 % of the bending moment is
resisted by the flanges and the rest of
the bending moment is resisted by
the web.
◎ About 95% of the shear force is
resisted by the web and the rest of
the shear force is resisted by the
flanges.

Steel beams are classified as (IS : 808-1989):
◎ Indian Standard Joist/junior Beams – ISJB
◎ Indian Standard Light Beams – ISLB
◎ Indian Standard Medium Weight Beams – ISMB
◎ Indian Standard Wide Flange Beams – ISWB
Rolled steel columns/heavy weight beams are classified as (IS : 808-1989):
◎ Indian Standard Column Sections – ISSC
◎ Indian Standard Heavy Weight Beams – ISHB
Refer IS 808:1989

12
Channel Sections

◎ Channel section consists of a web

and two flanges.
◎ Junction between the flange and the
web is known as fillet.
◎ Channels are used as beams and
columns

Nomenclature used: MC 225 @ 0.261 kN/m

Signifies: Medium Weight Channel 225 mm depth weighing 0.261 kN/m

13
Channel Sections

14
Tee Sections

◎ Section consists of a web and a

flange.
◎ Junction between the flange and the
web is known as fillet.
◎ Also used with flat strips to connect
plates in the steel rectangular tanks

15
Hollow Sections/ Steel Tube Section

◎ Used as columns and compression members and tension members

in tubular trusses

Rectangular Hollow Section Circular Hollow Section

16
Hollow Sections/ Steel Tube Section

17
Angle Sections

◎ Angles are available as equal angles and unequal angles.

◎ Thickness of legs of equal and unequal angle sections are equal.

Nomenclature:∟200 x 100 x 10 mm (∟200 100 @ 0.228 kN/m)

18
Angle Sections

19
Rolled Steel Flats

◎ Used for lacing of elements in built up members, such as columns and

are also used as ties.

20
2.
Cold Rolled Sections

21
Cold Rolled Sections

◎ Lightweight alternative to relatively

heavy hot rolled sections
◎ Generally only a few millimetres in
wall thickness
◎ Save material and handling costs;
and building dead load.
◎ Available in a wide variety of section
profiles.
◎ Mostly non-structural use

Com pound Sections

25
Com pound Sections

◎ Produced by welding together standard sections.

◎ Various profiles are possible, which can be designed specifically
for extreme situations such as very high loads and long spans.

Open W eb Beam s

30
Open Web Beam s

◎ Particularly suited to long spans with light to moderate loading.

◎ Relative increase in depth will help resist deflection and voids in the
web will reduce structural dead load

31
Open Web Beam s – Perforated Beam

◎ Standard beam section with circular voids cut about the neutral axis.

32
Open Web Beam s – Cas tellated Beam

◎ Beams with profile cut into web and welded together to create a new
beam 50% deeper than the original.

33
Open Web Beam s – Cas tellated Beam

34
Open Web Beam s – L itzk a Beam

◎ Standard beam cut as the castellated beam, but with overall depth
increased further by using spacer plates welded to the projections.
