THE ELEMENTARY SCIENCE CURRICULUM

Science is valued because it has helped in satisfying many basic human needs and improving living
conditions. Advances in technology and science are transforming our world at an incredible and an
unimaginable pace. We cannot escape science from and we cannot measure the significance of science.

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

● define science;
● characterize scientist;
● discuss the steps in the scientific process;
● explore why some students love science and others do not;
● brainstorm ways on how teachers can make the teaching and learning of Science engaging for
students; and
● Characterize features and elements of an engaging science classroom.

Science is our way of understanding the world—its wondrous structure, natural events, interrelated
elements and systems, and processes. It is an exciting and, at the same time, a useful endeavour that
benefits our community and society at large.

Aside from sustainability movement, education could become the most important application of science
in the next decades.

The word ‘’science’’ is derived from the Latin word scientia meaning knowledge. Science is commonly
referred to a systematic and organized body of knowledge in any area of inquiry that is acquired using
‘’the scientific method.’’ Science has many facets and definitions that can be summarized into the
following:

● Science as a broad body of knowledge- Physical sciences consist of disciplines such as physics
(the science of physical objects), chemistry (the science of matter), and astronomy (the science
of celestial objects.) Earth sciences consist of disciplines such as geology (the science of earth).
● Science as set of skills- The science process skills from the foundation of scientific methods.
There are six basic science process skills: observation, communication, classification,
measurement, inference, and prediction. All six basic skills are important individually as well as
when they are integrated.

● Science as an intellectual activity- Science is the intellectual, practical, and systematic study of
the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and
experiment.
● Science as a social activity- Science is a social shaped by history, institutions, beliefs, and values.
Society shapes science and vice versa.
● Science as problem-solving- Problem-solving skills are necessary in all areas of life, and the
science class provides the students opportunity to develop and utilize their problem-solving
skills, which include the ability to critically analyse a problem, determine all its elements, and
prepare a feasible solution.
● Science as a career- Individuals who have devoted themselves in studying and doing science
have established careers in science , such as biologists, chemists, environmentalists,
astronomers, medical practitioners, among others.
● Science as global human endeavor- Science is a result of human imagination, ingenuity, and
creativity. Individuals and teams from many nations and cultures have contributed to science
and to advances in technology.
● Science as a process- The scientific method is a set of steps for verifying and building scientific
knowledge. When performing this process, one employs skills necessary to research a topic,
develop a plan and timeline, and draw conclusions from research results.

Activity I. Defining Science

Do you remember how your previous teachers, readings, and classes define science? Create a
word cloud below to illustrate/show these definitions or keywords. Be guided by the sample
word cloud on knowledge below. You should create your OWN word cloud.

Activity 2. The facets of Science

Science means several things to various individuals and institutions. You can see the various
facets of science in the first column below. On the opposite column, write your insights and
reflection about each of the facets of science.

Facets of Science Insights and Reflection

1. Science as broad body of knowledge Science can be described as a structure that

is systematic and is capable of verification,
based on correct findings and precise
principles. It is a storehouse of fundamental
truths and its results are applicable in all
situations safely. Management is a science in
this sense, which has also developed certain
systematic knowledge.

2. Science as a set of skills The ability to acquire science processes is a

set of skills used in research. Each activity
should enhance students' ability to develop
science processes, including observation,
reference, prediction, questions, hypothesis
building, experimentation design, application
of concepts and communication.

3. Science as intellectual activity Science is the intellectual and practical

activities which include systemic observation
and experimentation in the structure and
behavior of the physical and natural world.

4. Science as a social activity Traditional science philosophy is constantly

individualistic. It focuses on individual actors
and on the conditions to be fulfilled in the
proper support of their beliefs. On the other
hand, it is a curious constraint, since modern
science and most past sciences is obviously a
social activity.

5. Science as a problem solving Critical thinking and problem solving have

traditionally been linked to various areas the
fundamental thinking is rooted in
comportemental science, whereas math and
science are linked to problem solving.

6. Science as a career It helps us to develop scientific knowledge and

theory of all that you find in the world.

7. Science as a global human endeavor The development of science and technology in

human life is causing numerous advances.
Such discoveries and inventions led to human
civilization being promoted. There have been
many definitive declarations on science, most
of which focus on the conventional approach
in scientific endeavours.

8. Science as a process The study of decision-making processes and

communication strategies within and between
organisms in a social system is carried out by
behavioral sciences, which abstract empirical
data. The mental operations, or mental
processes, that are used in mental inferences
are related in different ways, so they are
frequently perplexed.

Activity 3. The Scientific Irony

Science is a very exciting subject and process, but why do teachers have difficulty engaging all
the students in learning and doing science? In pair or triad, reflect on this question. Write the
reasons why the students love learning and doing science in the first column and the reasons for
their disinterest in third column. In the second column titled BUT, write the manifestations of
the students’ disinterest in the subject.

Students love Science BUT They hate Science class

and observations.

Activity 4. Designing My Future Science Class

Your goal as a future science teacher should be to engage your students to love learning and
doing science. What are the features of an ideal science? Characterize each of the elements
below.

Elements Characteristics/Features

Teacher •Being dedicated.

• Being surrounded by a large number of

diverse students, each with their own baggage
and unique character.

• Positive strengthening,commends students

and rectifies their mistakes.

Curriculum Science should be taught as a hands-on

experience, and it should be a natural part of
the daily curriculum. When science activities
are integrated throughout the curriculum,
language and literacy development is greatly
aided. Science is taught by observing,
manipulating, solving problems, and
participating in science activities.

Students Successful online students must be well-

rounded, with characteristics such as self-
control, motivation, and time management;
thus, successful online students must be
responsible and adaptable.

Classroom The ideal classroom is a welcoming

environment where students can work toward
specific goals outlined in the class objectives.
The teacher must be cheerful, well-organized,
outgoing, self-assured, and compassionate. The
instructor is frequently the one who sets the
tone for the entire class.
