Image of a Leader:

As nurses, we must always seek to improve our professional image and strive for clinical
excellence. Nursing leadership includes critical thinking, decision making, action, and advocacy
(Chappell & Richards, 2015). Nurses in their role demonstrate clinical leadership skills by
providing, facilitating, and promoting the best possible care for their patients. In addition, nurses
at the clinical practice when providing direct client care are expected to show leadership skills
when collaborating with healthcare teams or members. Therefore, there is need for functional
nursing clinical leadership at all levels and domains of nursing practice to assure effective
collaboration of group to ensure highest quality of care provided (James, 2010).
While these images of a nurse are often linked to effective leadership, it is important to
note that few leaders possess all of these images. Generally, a strong leader will have many of
these qualities. But aspects of the situation also play an important role in determining if people
are able to lead well. In many cases, it is the interaction between these characteristics and
the situation that determines leadership quality.
