INTRODUCTION

Can you name the different objects in this picture? The Guitar, sofa, candle stand, bed,
pillows, picture, camera stand, etc… You can classify these things according to their
characteristics and properties. Knowing how these matters or materials change will help you
decide whether these can be useful, not useful, or can be harmful to the environment. You can
investigate how some materials can exist as solid, liquid, or gas, depending on the temperature.
You need to observe the proper handling of materials to prevent accidents. Science will explain
these phenomena.

KICK OFF

 Matter makes up the planet.

 Matter can be grouped and described by their characteristics and properties
 The forms of matter are solid, liquid, and gas
 Heat and changes in temperature can change matter

 We use and handle materials with care.

In this module you will learn about:

7
 Properties of matter
 Proper handling and care of materials
 Changes that materials undergo

Matter is anything around us. The water you

drink, the air you breathe, the flowers and trees
At the end of the module, you are matters are matters. The land, the seas and the
expected to: sky also matters. Living things and non-living
things are made up of matter. The three basic
forms of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.
1. Use the properties of materials,
whether they are useful or
harmful.

2. Investigate changes that happen

in materials under the following
conditions
 The presence or lack of
oxygen
 Application of heat

3. Design a product out of local,

recyclable solid and/or liquid
materials in making useful
products

LESSON 1.1: SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS

Prayer

Dear God, help me to feel Your presence today as I study my lesson. Give me
enough knowledge and wisdom so that I can understand my lesson, help me focused on my
study, and accomplish my activity for today. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen!

What I Need to Know

OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the science process skills
2. Use the process skills to answer exercises
3. State how skills can be used in everyday life

INTEGRATION OF FAITH AND VALUES IN LEARNING (IFVL)

For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 6:6
13
In the knowledge of God all true knowledge and read development have their source.
Whenever we turn, in the physical, the mental, or the spiritual realm; in whatever we behold,
apart from the blight of sin, this knowledge is revealed. (Ed. 14)
What’s In?
Isn't it refreshing knowing that God will help us and give us focus in our study? Now,
let's start our study by asking ourselves the following questions that will guide us in the whole
lesson.
 Have you dreamed to be a Scientist?
 How do scientists investigate the natural world?
 What skills do Scientists use?

What Is It?
Now, let's read and learn about science process skills.
What a scientist does? Scientists discover new things and research on how things
work. They conduct scientific research to advance knowledge in an area of their interest. They
observe, predict, interpret, measure, classified things, formulate hypotheses, and communicate
results to people like you and me.
Observing is the most fundamental of all processes. We use one or more of our senses to
gather information. It may be quantitative or qualitative. Microscopes and measuring devices can
be used for observation.
Inferring or making inferences. When you explain or interpret the things that you
observe, you use.
Measuring is the process of comparing an unknown quantity with a standard.
Predicting. Making a statement or claim about what will happen based on present
conditions.
Classifying. When you group together of items that are alike in some ways you.
Communicating is when you represent observations, ideas, theoretical models, or
conclusions by talking, writing, drawing, and making physical models.

14
Formulating hypothesis is giving a tentative explanation to a problem or question. It
must be testable.
In designing experiments, you must know how to control variables. Variables refer to all
other factors that can affect the result of experiments. Manipulated variable or independent
variable is the material or condition that is purposely changed in an experiment. Responding
variable or dependent variable is the factor that may change due to the manipulated variable.
Scientists use these skills (which comes from God Proverbs 2:6, do you believe in that?)
to explore and discover the natural world. Since we, like the scientist, wants to explore and
discover things, we also applied these skills in answering questions that we encounter every day.
As we acquire these skills, we need to use these for God's glory. And as we explore and discover
things around us, it will lead us to the Author of it, and God wants us to search His Word, the
Bible, and from it, we will learn more about Bible truth.

What I Have Learned?

 Science process skills are important tools in

observing and explaining the natural world.
 These skills are not just for scientists. They can also
be applied in your daily tasks and in solving real-life
problems.

Additional Activities
Are you ready to test yourself about what you've learned? I want you to read carefully all
the instructions and answer it carefully based on your understanding on the lesson we've studied.

Identifying the following. Write your answer on the space provided.
