The Protectors Mod - Army Limit Explained

The document explains the new army limit system in The Protectors mod which uses a food system. Units and buildings consume food while buildings produce food, and the top left displays the current food storage and income/expenditure. If storage runs out and units start starving, restrictions are placed until income exceeds expenditure and starvation ends. Proper management of food reserves through building and unit numbers is important to avoid starvation and skillfully wage war.

The Protectors mod

-Army limit explained-

The army limit system has been totally transformed from the original Warlords Battlecry game.
This document explains how to read the new system and skillfully use it in The Protectors mod.

First off, the units in TPC need food now and all army limit issues will be dealt in food. Food is
obtained from all buildings (built or converted) and some researches, spells, skills and upgrades.
Consumption of food is done by all units, including hero, armies, retinue, characters and critters.
In game, the army limit display can be seen on the top left corner of the screen.

There, you will see two numbers constantly changing, separated by one slash symbol (‘/’). The first
number represents the food storage, while the second one shows the food income.

In this image, the storage has 18 units of food left while production and
consumption of food brings an income of 7 per in-game second.

Income shows by what amount the storage will be modified per in-game second. If the counter shows
‘+7’ like in the picture above, then the food reserves in your storage will grow by 7 per in-game second
(resulting in a +25 storage next second in this case, then +32 and so on). If there is a minus symbol (‘-’),
then the numbers shows expenditure of food or ‘negative income’. This happens when food production
is smaller than food consumption (have less buildings than units, army-point wise).

In this image, the storage has 10 units of food left, while production and
consumption of food brings an expenditure of 8 per in-game second. In the next
second of the game, the storage indicator would show +2.

Storage shows how much food reserves you have left. Income will increase this number, expenditure
will decrease it and if there is no income and expenditure (‘0’) then it will not be modified. Whenever
the food in the storage runs out, a starvation indicator will appear. While the starvation text is visible,
the counter on the left shows how bad your units are starving or a ‘negative storage’ and the
income/expenditure work in reverse (‘+’ decreases and ‘-’ increases it).
In this image, the units are starving by 69 points, and are getting +9 hungrier
per in-game second.

During starvation periods, you cannot train more units (you will be announced that you have too many
men whenever you try) and suffer a morale reduction. To end these periods, you need to decrease the
starving points to zero by making income (or decreasing the expenditure below 0), meaning building
more structures and/or loosing more units.

In this image, starvation is about to end, as the income is of 6.

Once you have income, and starvation is 0 or below, the text will disappear and all restrictions will be
removed, while the number on the left will start showing food reserves again.

That sums it up. After experimenting a little you will soon learn that it is better to avoid starvation or
escape it as soon as possible, while in some conditions it is better to make a huge and hungry army to
defeat your opponents. What’s more, guessing what the enemies’ reserves look like based on their unit
and building numbers revealed through scouting will make you develop strategies to tip the tides of war
into your favor by a great amount. The Protectors food system truly makes unit management and attack
timing more important, while the battles overall become larger!
