User Experience Design: Definition

Information Technology and

Information Systems Department
User Experience
 It refers to the meaningful and relevant
experiences of the user.

 In IT, it refers to the quality of holistic user

engagement to the system in which user
capabilities and limitation are taken in
considerations by the designers and
developers, along with business goals and
context and content.

 The satisfaction of the user’s needs from the

system.

User Experience
Design
 A process done to ensure the solution’s
provision of user’s meaningful and relevant
experiences.

 The design of holistic user engagement with

the solution.

 It focuses on the deep understanding of

user’s needs, limitations and abilities as
users.

User Experience
Designer
 A UX designer is someone who investigates
and analyzes how users feel about the
products he or she offers them. [1]
 UX designers apply acquired knowledge to
product development in order to ensure that
the user has the best possible experience
with a product. [1]
 UX designers conduct research, analyze
their findings, inform other members of the
development team of their findings, monitor

findings are implemented, and do much
more. [1]

Areas Related to Building User

Experience
Information Technology and
Information Systems Department
Project Management
It focuses on planning and organizing
a project and its resources.
Usability Evaluation
It focuses on how well users can learn
and use a product to achieve their
User Research goals. It also refers to how satisfied
It focuses on understanding user users are with that process.

The Areas
[3]
behaviors, needs, and motivations
through observation techniques, task
analysis, and other feedback
methodologies. User Interface Design
It focuses on anticipating what users
might need to do and ensuring that
the interface has elements that are
Information Architecture (IA) easy to access, understand, and use
to facilitate those actions.
It focuses on how information is
organized, structured, and presented
to users.

Information Technology and

Information Systems Department
Interaction Design (IxD)
It focuses on creating engaging
interactive systems with well
thought out behaviors. Accessibility
It focuses on how a disabled
individual accesses or benefits from a
site, system or application. Section
508 is the governing principal for
Visual Design accessibility.

The Areas
[3]
It focuses on ensuring an
aesthetically pleasing interface that
is in line with brand goals.

Web Analytics
It focuses on the collection, reporting,
Content Strategy and analysis of website data.
It focuses on writing and curating
useful content by planning the
creation, delivery and governance
behind it.

Usability

Usability

 A sub-discipline of user experience design. [4]

 The ability of the solution to have its user’s

learnability, ease of achieving objective/s
and competence in utilizing the solution.

 Solution features, the user, what the user

determines the level of usability. [4]

Information Technology and

Learnability
It should be easy for the user to
become familiar with and
competent in using the user
interface on the first contact
with the solution.

Ease of Achieving Objective Usability

It should be easy for users to
achieve their objective through
using the solution. A usable interface has three main outcomes

Building User’s Competence

It should be easy to recall the
user interface and how to use it
on subsequent visits.

Usability Testing

 The practice of testing how easy a design is

to use on a group of representative users. [5]

 It usually involves observing users as they

attempt to complete tasks and can be done
for different types of designs, from user
interfaces to physical products.[5]

 It is conducted in repetition, within the

whole solution development process. [5]

Information Systems Department

Usability Testing

 The main benefit and purpose of usability

testing is to identify usability problems with
a design as early as possible, so they can be
fixed before the design is implemented or
[5]
mass produced.

Example Usability Testing
In order to say that the solution is usable, the solution should pass the minimum criteria in the test.
The example below is from Interaction Design Foundation.
