particular purpose or situation. This time, we will check if you can still differentiate each one of
them.
Are you ready? Try this one.
DIRECTIONS: Identify the type of communicative style used in the following situations. Write
FRO for frozen, FOR for formal, CON for consultative, CAS for casual, and INT
for intimate style.

_______________ 1) Talking with your father

_______________ 2) Group of friends meeting each other after a long time
_______________ 3) Singing the “Martsa ng Mandaluyong”
_______________ 4) Student when asking something to his/her teacher
_______________ 5) President Rodrigo Duterte delivering his public address about the
government’s effort to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

INTRODUCTION

Challenge yourself! With your sibling, try to read aloud and listen to the dialog given below.

Can you guess who is the one talking in the conversation?

- Hi, babe! How was your day?
- Great! We had finished a lot of
activities today. And yours?
- I’m fine but stressful. Pass me that
magazine, please.
- Here you go.
To whom do you think he/she intends to say it? How do you think the character delivered
his/her lines? If he/she would be talking to his/her teacher, do you think he would use the
same and exact words as well?
Again, with your sibling, try to read aloud and listen to the two dialogs presented below.

- Hi, Cybee! Can you give me a hand? - Hey, Carlo! How are ya?
- Sure, Justine. What’s up? - Yo, dude! Nothing much! And you?
- I can’t get to this mathematical problem. - Yeah, good. Studying a lot.
- Why don’t you try to use a calculator? - That sound hard. Hey, how did your
college admission test go? Wasn’t that
today?
- Oh, yeah! I think it went well. They said
they would call in a few days.
Based from the sample dialogs - Well, I’m sure you did great. Btw, do they
presented, to whom do you think the offer any engineering courses?
speaker is talking to? - Mmm… Yes, I think they do.
Are there changes in communicative - That’s great! Thanks for the info.
- Sure, no problem.
style between the two situations?

POINTS TO REMEMBER!

a. Choice of communicative style depends on the audience, location, topic, and

purpose.
Example: It would certainly be inappropriate to use vocabulary reserve for boyfriend or
girlfriend when speaking to your boss.
b. The concept of formality of language differ from culture to culture.

__________________________________________________________________________________________
MELC Q1 - Week No. 7 - Competency Code: ____
Competency: Determine the vocabulary or jargons expected of a communicative style
3
Example: Your classmate who came from other provinces is culturally and linguistically
diverse which also affects one’s language.
c. An individual can use various styles to the same audience depending on the topic
of communication.
d. It is important to understand the differences between styles so one can use language
that is appropriate for a particular situation. If one’s register is too high, he/she
may come across as being pretentious or arrogant. On the other hand, if one’s
register is too low, he/she can come across as being inappropriately informal or
offensive.
Some students need to be taught about these ideas and on how to adjust one’s
language and vocabulary based on various situations. Are you one of them? If you are not,
then you must make the most out of each speech situation, both as a receiver and producer
of language, which is the fundamental to success.
Now, challenge yourself! I will provide some interesting activities based from the previous
discussion. Would you like to see some examples similar to what I prepared for you? Enjoy
them!

paper. Kindly attach your output on this page. (5 pts. each)

civil rights movement because of his activism and inspirational speeches in ending the legal
segregation of African-American citizens in the United States.

Dream.” Identify what communicative style is underlined in the text. Answer
the questions that follow. Write it in one whole sheet of paper and attach your
output on this page.

I Have a Dream
Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as

the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we
stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree
came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been
seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end
the long night of their captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred
years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of
segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the
Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material
prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the
corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so
we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition…

Processing Questions:
1) What do think is the speech all about? (2 pts.)
2) What communicative style is presented in the text? Justify your answer. (2 pts.)
3) If you were to give a two-liner quotation on what we need to make Philippines a better
country today, what would you say? What would be your dream? (2 pts.)
You are now almost done with all the required activities and tasks. You diligently followed
the requirements. It is now about time to know the five most interesting ideas you have
discovered during the lesson.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

DIRECTIONS: 5x5 JOURNALING – Identify and briefly answer five things that resonate with
you about each one and explain why. Copy the table given below and write your

Something I learned this week
