ASSIGNMENT 2: Selection of a Research Approach

According to the author, Research approaches are plans and techniques for research ranging
from the steps from broad assumptions to detailed methods of data collection, analysis, and
interpretation. Research approaches, research designs, and research methods are three defining
components of a research project.

The chapter mainly focuses on three research approaches: (a) Qualitative, (b) Quantitative,
and (c) Mixed methods.

These approaches define the path of advancement of the research. Qualitative and quantitative
approaches are not distinct categories or polar opposites but are interconnected and similar in
various cases. The mixed methods research resides in the middle and it incorporates the
elements of both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

The author then discusses about a term called Worldview. Worldview is a general philosophical
orientation about the world and the nature of research that a researcher brings to a study. There
are four main worldviews that are widely discussed. They are Post positivism, Constructivism,
Transformative, and Pragmatism.

Post positivists hold a deterministic philosophy in which sources determine the results. The
Social constructivists believe that individuals seek understanding of the world in which they live.
A transformative worldview, on the other hand, states that research inquiry needs to be mixed
with politics to confront social oppression at whatever levels it occurs. Pragmatism is not
committed to any single system of philosophy and reality. The notable point about these
approaches is that researchers are free to choose the methods, techniques, and procedures of
research according to their individual needs and purposes.

The researcher also has a choice on the type of study to be performed. This is where research
designs emerge to importance. Research designs are the types of inquiry within qualitative,
quantitative, and mixed methods approaches that provide a specific route for procedures in
research. The designs available to the researcher have changed or evolved over the years with
the advancement in technology.

The other major element in the framework is the specific research methods or tools that involve
the forms of data collection, analysis, and interpretation that researchers use for their study.

Hence, in planning a research project, according to the author, the choice of an approach
(qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approach) depends on various factors. The selected
approach also takes into consideration the research problem or issue being studied and the
audience for whom the researcher conducts the research.
