ALTERNATIVE GRADING SYSTEM FOR

THE SECOND SEMESTER / TRIMESTER
OF ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-2021

I. GENERAL RULES

In view of the challenges and difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic which
continue to affect the faculty members and students of the PLM, the following Alternative
Grading System shall be implemented for the Second Semester/Trimester of Academic Year
2020-2021, pursuant to Board Resolution No. 4871 dated 17 June 2021:

1. If a student failed to attend at least 10% of the classes, the student shall be asked to
submit reasons for the absences. The faculty of the College shall then deliberate on the
submitted reasons and consult the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
(SVPAA).

a. If the College, after deliberation and consultation, finds the reasons acceptable,
the student shall be given a mark of “Dropped due to COVID-19”.

The following reasons shall be considered acceptable:

i. The student or a member of the student’s household tested positive for

COVID-19 during the term.

ii. The student or a member of the student’s household experienced severe

symptoms of COVID-19 or any other illness during the term.

iii. The student’s family suffered severe economic dislocation which

prevented the student from completing the academic requirements of the
course.

iv. Other similarly serious and unavoidable circumstances.

The mark of “Dropped due to COVID-19” shall not be counted against the
student –

i. in evaluating the academic status of the student;

ii. in evaluating the student’s qualification for, or disqualification from,
academic honors; or

iii. in applying the Maximum Residency Rule (MRR) to the student.

b. If the student does not submit any reason or the College, after deliberation and
consultation, finds the submitted reasons unacceptable, the student shall be
given a mark of “Dropped Unofficially (5.0)”.

2. A student who attended at least 10% of the classes and was able to meet the minimum
academic requirements of a course shall be given the appropriate grade, which shall not
be lower than “3.0”.

3. A student who attended at least 10% of the classes but was not able to meet the
minimum academic requirements of a course shall be given a mark of “Incomplete”.

The student shall then be given a one-year period – subject to the pertinent deadlines
under the University Calendar for Academic Year 2021-2022 – within which to
complete the minimum academic requirements of the course.

Alternatively, the professor of the course may prescribe substitute requirements – such
as makeup examinations, special projects or other academic activities – in lieu of the
regular academic requirements of the course.

a. If within the one-year period, the student completes the minimum academic
requirements (or the substitute requirements, if any were allowed), the student
shall be given the appropriate grade, which shall not be lower than “3.0”.

b. Alternatively, within the one-year period, the student may opt to apply to drop
the course instead of completing the minimum academic requirements,
submitting the reasons therefor. The faculty of the College shall then deliberate
on the submitted reasons and consult the SVPAA.

i. If the College, after deliberation and consultation, finds the reasons

submitted acceptable, the student shall be given a mark of “Dropped
due to COVID-19”. (Please refer to item I.a.i above on what reasons are
acceptable.)

ii. If the College, after deliberation and consultation, finds the reasons
unacceptable, the student shall be given a failing mark.

c. If, within the one-year period, the student [i] failed to complete the minimum
academic requirements (or substitute requirements, if any were allowed) and
[ii] did not apply to drop the course, the student shall be given a failing mark.

4. A mark of “Incomplete” shall not be counted in computing a student’s General

Weighted Average (GWA).

5. A student shall not be allowed to take a course which requires as a prerequisite another
course in which the student has a mark of “Incomplete”.

6. Similarly, in programs with Internship, a student shall not be allowed to undergo
Internship if the student has a mark of “Incomplete” in a course that is a prerequisite
to such Internship.

II. Additional Guidelines for the College of Medicine

In the College of Medicine, where students are graded covering the entire Academic
Year, the following rules shall apply:

1. The following grounds for dismissal from the College shall not be applied:

a. Failing more than 25% of the academic load.

b. Failing a repeated subject.

2. A student who passed at least 75% of the academic load and passed the prerequisite
courses may be allowed to take selected courses in the next level.

3. A failing mark shall not –

a. disqualify a student from scholarship;

b. be counted in computing a student’s GWA for purpose of retaining entrance

scholarship;

c. disqualify from Latin Honors a student graduating in AY 2020-2021; or

d. be considered when applying the MRR to a student.

This order shall take effect immediately and shall supersede any inconsistent provisions
of previous issuances.
