Outline

Introduction

“I Have a Dream”

 Background information about a topic:

o On the steps of a memorial to the President who opposed slavery in the Southern

States, Martin Luther King, Jr. (social rights activist) once stated, “I have a

dream”.

 Definition of key concepts:

o The rhetorical tactic of pathos relates to sentiment, empathic responses, and

shared beliefs.

o Kairos is a complicated term to comprehend because it is dependent on

circumstance. Simply said, it's when you say the perfect thing at the right time.

o Ethos is the method of using somebody with appropriate experience or credibility

to persuade the audience to believe the statement.

 Importance of the topic in relation to the key concepts and current situation:

o This speech starts with strong use of diction that communicates to the listener

both logically and emotionally.

o Martin Luther King, Jr. uses symbolism, metaphorical imagery, and strong diction

to make an impression on the listener. These rhetorical techniques use ethos,

pathos, and Kairos to assist the audience to understand Martin Luther King Jr.'s

vision and intent.

Body 1: (The purpose of the speech and the current situation of the African Americans)
Body 2: (Use of Symbols and Metaphors)

Martin Luther King, Jr. uses a range of symbols and metaphorical language to express the

necessity of racial equality to the audience. This body paragraph will focus on the symbolism he

employs and how it impacts and influences the African American situation in the US at the time.

Body 3: (Language)

The wording prompts for justice and continues to repeat itself. The word “justice”

appears several times in the speech. This body paragraph will concentrate on the word choices he

made during the speech, as well as the effect of repeating particular words.

Body 4: (Use of Historical Events)

MLK employs historical events like Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation to

great effect. Because Lincoln was renowned for fighting for African Americans, this was

remarkably efficient. This paragraph will concentrate on his utilization of these seemingly minor

details that had a significant influence.

Conclusion

 Ultimately, MLK's style of speaking is immediately identifiable and successful

throughout this work in conveying his point of view on the subject.

 The speech provides a particularly direct message for the white population, as well as

hints on how to improve the current society's abusive attitude.

 Inequality towards minority races like Asians, African Americans, and Hispanics

continues to be a problem today. Consequently, this is a call to action to continue

working for MLK's vision and dream.
