RECONNAISSANCE

Reconnaissance is a survey term for Planning which is prerequisite and

indispensable to the success of any project. A wise saying has it that whosoever
fails to plan is planning to fail in life. The planning for this project involved two
major stages, namely office and field reconnaissance

1.11 Office Planning

Office planning is the aspect that involves the compilation and study of the
available information related to the project. At this stage, important decisions were
taken these includes: the choice of instrument to be used as well as time and
method to be adapted were all considered. Google imagery to update and identify
communities within the prospect area, Controls to be used for connection,
coordinates of the control to be used, and types of beacons to be used are all
operations to be studied before commencement of the project. Another important
aspect is the GPS planning for the availability of GPS satellites, DOP and sky
plots.

1.12 Field Reconnaissance

The main aim of this field reconnaissance is to locate suitable positions for
stations, hence poorly executed field reconnaissance can lead to difficulties at later
stages in the survey leading to wasted time and inaccurate work. In the field
reconnaissance, the following operations would be carried out
i. An overall picture of the area to be obtained by walking over the site
(Keeping in mind the requirement of the survey and balancing this
against the accuracy and hence method of survey to be used.)
ii. Where to locate Stations such that they are clearly intervisible and are
placed at convenient ground level.
