Sine, Cosine and Tangent

Opposite & adjacent sides and SOHCAHTOA of angles

The Sine, Cosine and Tangent functions express the ratios of sides of a right triangle. See below for greater detail

Sine Function
The sine of an angle is always the ratio of the (opposite side)/(hypotenuse).

Sine of ABC=AC /AB

  (opposite side)/(hypotenuse)

Cosine Function
The cosine of an angle is always the ratio of the (adjacent side/ hypotenuse)

The cosine of ABC =CB/AB

(adjacent side)/(hypotenuse)

Tangent Function
The tangent of an angle is always the ratio of the (opposite side)/(adjacent side)

The tangent of ABC =AC/ CB

Practice Identifying Adjacent and Opposite Sides

Identify the opposite and adjacent sides of YZX.
Answer

The key to solving this kind of problem is to remember that 'opposite' and
'adjacent' are relative to an angle of the triangle--which in this case is the shaded
angle in the picture.

Identify the side that is opposite of IHU and the side that is adjacent to IHU.

The inverse trigonometric functions (sin-1, cos-1, and tan-1) allow you to find the measure of an angle in a right
triangle. All that you need to know are any two sides as well as how to use SOHCAHTOA.

Vs. Interior Angle Sum

Compare This Method To the tried and true theorem that the sum of
the interior angles of a triangle is 180°.

What is the degree measure of LNM?

Interior Angle Sum Way

Since the total measure of the interior angles of a triangle is 180

degrees we can verify the measure of LNM

180° -16° - 90° =74 °

.
Alternately, you could use the inverse of one of the SOHCAHTOA
functions, in this case the inverse of sine (sin-1)! To find, an angle of a
right triangle all that we need to know is the length of two sides! Then
use the same SOHCAHTOA ratios --just in a different fashion See the
example below.

Inverse SOHCAHTOA Way

sin-1(73.24/76.19) =74 °

The Area of a Triangle: SAS Formula

The Side Angle Side Formula

The Side Angle Side formula for finding the area of a triangle is a
way to use the sine trigonometric function to calculate the height of a
triangle and use that value to find the area of the triangle.
The SAS formula = ½ (side1 ×  side2) × sine(included angle)

The Side Angle Side Formula

= ½ (42 ×16) × sin(68 °)

The Side Angle Side formula simply is an application of the sine

function to find the height. For more information, read below.

To use the Side Angle Side Formula, make sure that you are
proficient using SOHCAHTOA. Specifically, you should be able to
solve problems like the one immediately below. The SAS formula is
simply an application of sine to find the height of a triangle and then
to use that height to find the triangle's area.

In the triangle on the left, how long is h?

   Length of H

 sin(68)=opposite/hypotenuse

 sin(68)= h/8

 h=8•
sin(68) = 7.4
