Assignment No-3 Env107L

This document is a lab assignment submitted by Israt Jahan Ritu to their professor Md. Nurul Amin at North South University. It contains the student's answers to 6 questions about ocean water properties and the impacts of sea level rise in Bangladesh. The questions calculate density, mass, volume, and sea level changes with temperature variations, and discuss which coastal regions are most vulnerable and consequences like salinity intrusion, effects on fisheries and agriculture, and health and environmental impacts.

Answer to the question no-1

Figure 1: AQI of Dhaka, Bangladesh on 4th July, 2021

Answer to the question no-2

Table 1: Measurements and reading for calculating the density of water at 24.6 0C.
Parameters Measurements and calculations
Volume of water (mL) 100.00
Mass of flask (g) 58.03
Mass of flask (g) + water (g) 157.92
Mass of water (g) 99.89
Density of water (g/mL) [mass/volume] 0.9989

Answer to the question no-3

Given that,
Room temperature=24. 6 ̊C (from the previous question)
Volume of ocean water= 1.35 x1024cm^3(given)
Density = 0.9989 g/ml (question 2)
= 0.9989 g/ml (1 ml = 1 cm^3)
According to the equation,
Mass= density x volume
= (0.9989 g/ cm^3) x (1.35 x10^24 cm^3)
= 1.348515 x 10^24
So, the mass of 1.35 x10^24 cm3 ocean water at 24.6 ̊C is 1.348515 x 10^24

Answer to the question no-4

We know that,
Density (d) =mass/volume
So, Volume=mass/density
At 60 ̊ C (given)
Density = 0.9989 g/cm^3
Mass= 1.348515 x 10^24 g (from the previous question)
According to the equation,
Volume=mass/density
= (1.348515 x 10^24 g) / (0.9989 g/c m^3)
=1.35 x 10^24
So, the volume of ocean water at 60 ̊ C would be 1.35 x 10^24 cm3

Answer to the question no-5

We know that,
The volume of the box=surface area of the oceans x the depth of the box
So, the depth of the box=the volume of the box/surface area of the ocean
At 60 ̊ C,
Volume = 1.35 x 10^24 cm^3 (from question 4)
Surface area of the box= 3.61 x 10^18 cm^2

Volume of the box= length x width x height

Surface area of the box= length x width
So, Volume of the box=Surface area of the box x height
Depth/height of the box = Volume of the box / Surface area of the box
= (1.35 x 10^24 cm^3) / (3.61 x 10^18 cm2)
= 373961.2188 cm
=3739.612188 m (100 cm = 1 m)

At 24.6 ̊ C,
Volume = 1.35 x 10^24cm^3 (given)
Surface area of the box= 3.61 x 10^18 cm^2

Surface area of the box= length x width

So, Volume of the box=Surface area of the box x height

Depth/height of the box=Volume of the box / Surface area of the box

= (1.35 x 10^24cm^3) / (3.61 x 10^18 cm^2)
= 373961.2188 cm
=3739.612188 m (100 cm= 1 m)

So, the sea level rise would be (3739.612188 m-3739.612188 m) = 0 m if the temperature rises
from 24.6 ̊C to 60 ̊ C.

Answer to the question no-6

The following are the regions that I believe will be the most adversely affected by sea level rise
in the future:
• Saint Martin Island
• Cox's Bazar
• Sundarban
• Kuakata
• Patukhali
• Chattogram
• Saint Martin Island

The following are some of the consequences of sea level rise in Bangladesh:

 Salinity intrusion: Sea level rise has a considerable impact on fresh water availability
because of salinity intrusion, which is one of the most significant effects of sea level rise
on water resources. In response to sea-level rise, both water and soil salinity will increase
along the coast, causing damage to the characteristic characteristics of coastal soil and
water.
 Implications for fisheries: As sea levels rise, the location of the stream channel will
shift, resulting in substantial changes in fish habitat and breeding grounds for fish.
 Impacts on agriculture: In addition to the lack of fresh water and soil degradation
caused by sea level rise, salt intrusion as a result of sea level rise will cause agricultural
production to be decreased.
 Impacts on health: When sea levels rise, it is possible that health risks such as diarrhea,
cholera, and other infections would increase.
 Environmental consequences: The Sundarbans will be completely submerged if sea
level rises by one meter. The extinction of the Sundarbans will result in a substantial loss
of cultural heritage, wildlife, fishing resources, life and livelihood, and, most
significantly, a highly productive ecosystem, all of which will be irreversible.
