QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
DIRECTION: Answer the following questions and write your answer on the space provided.
1. Give three other major scientific and technological developments in the world (or in the
Philippines) that created a large impact on your daily life.

I think the three major scientific and technological developments that created a
large impact in my daily life are paper, calculator and cosmetics. The innovation of paper
and calculator has a great help for me as a student. It is one of the important things that
we usually used in school related works, and it makes us easier to develop our
knowledge through solving critical problems. I considered cosmetic as well that created
a large impact since most people today always look forward in being confident in our
own way and to be able to stand out in pleasing manner.

2. What historical antecedents gave rise to the inventions you mentioned in the first
question?

Paper- As early as 3000 B.C., Egyptians had developed a technique for making

paper from the pith of the papyrus plant, a common sight along the bank of the Nile.

Long strips were woven together and weighted down to bind them into a strong, thin

sheet. The Egyptians also invented pens made of cut reeds, which were strong enough

to write on the papyrus, and mixed soot or other organic material with beeswax and

vegetable gum to make ink. Calculator- The history of the calculator, or what we know

of it, began with the hand-operated Abacus in Ancient Sumerian and Egypt in around

2000-2500 BC. These are very simple devices compared to modern calculators consisting

of sets of ten beads on a series of rods held in place on a quadrilateral frame usually

made of wood.
Cosmetic- We get our first glimpse of cosmetics in ancient Egypt, where makeup served

as a marker of wealth believed to appeal to the gods. The elaborate eyeliner

characteristic of Egyptian art appeared on men and women as early as 4000 BCE. Kohl,

rouge, white powders to lighten skin tone, and malachite eye shadow (the green color

of which represented the gods Horus and Re) were all in popular use.

3. How did the developments in science and technology shape human history? (essay use
at least 5 sentences to explain your answer?

The development in science and technology helps us shape our human history
because of this it made our life today simpler and easier. Science is valued by society
because its application helps to meet many basic human needs and improve living
standards. Technology has progressed in many aspects of our lives, making information
more accessible, improving communication, and changing transportation, to name a
few. While it is easy to sit back and enjoy the benefits of technological advancements, it
is critical that we do not become oblivious to their effects on society. Furthermore, this
development has played the vital role in improving our lives in better way and enhance
conditions around the globe.

4. What do you think is the importance of progressive invention? (essay, use at least 5
sentences to explain your answer?

- I think the importance of the progressive era is that many achievements of


inventions in the world during its era. Majority of new inventions were created to
assist people in need and to facilitate a massive flow of production in the growth of
"Good" Capitalism. Many famous inventors grew up during the progressive era,
including the Wright brothers, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell,
and many others. It has been possible to verify that each invention activates a
variety of benefits for the inventor and society, and it stimulates their imagination,
develops their potential when it comes to overcoming barriers, allows the ability to
visualize, stimulates perception, provokes new thoughts and new questions. Thus,
this progressive invention was an eye opener to make an innovative ideas beyond
our imagination.

5. Give 5 inventions from the past civilizations that are still used these days.

There are still inventions in the past that we used up to this day like paper, ink,
newspaper, watermill, telescope, and microscope. Paper or papyrus was invented
during Egyptian civilization to develop a system of writing and in our recent ties it is very
useful in any purposes like in school, businesses etc. Aside from paper, Egyptians also
made ink, engraving ceased to be used in writing and today inks used to develop and
produce it with different colors to use in creative and literary writings. Newspaper was
invented during Roman civilization and this invention is used for most people in the
world since it conveys and help to deliver information, events and what are the recent
happenings in the locality or world. Watermill of Greek civilization, it is commonly used
in agricultural processes like milling of grills and in the modern day it also helps for
converting mechanical energy into electricity. Telescope and microscope that was made
during Middle Ages is still used in our modern times for scientific research and
investigation also in medical field.
