Jhun Cyrille CLARIN - Lesson 3 Activity

1) The document describes an activity for students to design experiments testing how different factors affect projectile motion, using an online simulation. 2) Students are asked to test how initial speed, angle, and height impact the distance a projectile travels and ability to hit a target. 3) For each factor, students hypothesize the outcome, set test and outcome variables, and fire the projectile to observe results and draw a conclusion.

Lesson 3 Activity #1: Experimental Design with Projectiles!

Design and conduct your own experiments with projectiles!
Log onto http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php?sim=Projectile_Motion *Press RUN NOW button.

1) Write your best understanding of the word projectile:

- an object that is sent in the air

2) Name all of the factors you think affect projectile movement (try to list at least five factors):
- mass
- angle
- speed
- velocity
- height
- air resistance
- acceleration

Experiment 1:

3) Choose one of the factors you’ve just listed above and propose a question to test that factor. Your goal is to hit the target!

a) Factor:
- initial speed

b) Question:
- If a projectile get shot with a larger initial speed, will it get travel farther?

4) Write your hypothesis regarding how the factor you’ve chosen will affect your ability to hit the target (If…then…because):

If a projectile is shot with greater initial speed then it will travel farther because it has more power in the shot.

5) What is your test variable? _______9 m/s________ Outcome variable? _____________9.5 m/s____________

6) What variables should you keep constant? ______________________height___________________________

7) Once you have put all variables in place, fire away! Did you hit your target? Write a conclusion statement explaining your results.
Yes, it did hit the target but not perfectly that’s why 9.5 m/s should be the perfect to hit the target perfectly.

Experiment 2:

1) Choose a different factor than the one above and propose a question to test that factor. Your goal is to hit the target!

a) Factor: ________angle measure_______

b) Question:
Does the distance traveled by the projectile change because there is change in angle measure?

2) Write your hypothesis regarding how the factor you’ve chosen will affect your ability to hit the target (If…then…because):

If the projectile is shot with a wider angle measure then the distance that will be traveled will be shorter because it will vary in how high the projectile
traveled.

3) What is your test variable? ____________35 degrees________ Outcome variable? _______60 degrees______________

4) What variables should you keep constant? ___________________initial speed______________________________

5) Once you have put all variables in place, fire away! Did you hit your target? Write a conclusion statement explaining your results.

The projectile didn’t hit the target because it went over the target because the angle is not right then. The angle used is 35 degrees when it needs to be
60 so that it won’t go over the target.

Experiment 3:

1) Choose a different factor than the one above and propose a question to test that factor. Your goal is to hit the target!

a) Factor: _________height______

b) Question:

- Can the height of the projectile affect the distance travelled of the projectile?

2) Write your hypothesis regarding how the factor you’ve chosen will affect your ability to hit the target (If…then…because):

If the height of the projectile is high then the distance will be short because the projectile will travel more on how high than how far.

3) What is your test variable? ___________5 m_________ Outcome variable? ______________8m___________

4) What variables should you keep constant? ___________________________height______________________

5) Once you have put all variables in place, fire away! Did you hit your target? Write a conclusion statement explaining your results.
The hypothesis is correct because the height affect the distance that is traveled by the
projectile.
