Technology On Math Introduction

The document discusses how using technology in math classrooms can positively impact students' mathematical skills by enhancing learning and representation of concepts, but may also negatively impact skills if used for unrelated activities. It reviews literature showing technology can improve learning if used properly and engage students interested in technology, but some studies found students more likely to be distracted by unrelated uses of mobile devices. The purpose is to determine technology's overall impact on mathematical skills.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The ability of technology to connect the classroom learning to the real world

has created a modern angle in contextualizing mathematical learning. Technology

enhanced the students’ mathematical skills that offer more opportunity to learn and to

have the ability to compete in a contest, but technology might have a negative effect to

the students.

The dynamic nature of technology constrained teachers to re-evaluate the

mathematics that students ought to decide the finest strategies for achieving higher levels

of mathematics achievement. Numerous students are struggling to learn mathematics

today. Some students might state that they hate math and feel that they will never utilize

it in the future (Myers, 2009). Rojano (1996) has demonstrated that with the suitable use

of technology, students can learn more mathematics and on a deeper level. Technology

gives students the prospect of owning the mathematics that's being instructed by giving

more time for modeling and conceptualizing the numerical thoughts (NCTM, 2000).

Through the use of technology, students are able to produce numerous representations of

solutions.

In mathematics education, the approach message is that electronic technologies can

and need to be utilized to improve student mathematics learning. Excellent teachers of

mathematics are intentional and responsive in their use of technologies and are aware of a

1
range of techniques and procedures for using information and communication advances

in mathematics instructing (Lynch, 2006).

Burkhart (2011) stated that students are surrounded by technology, at school and

at home. Students are drawn to technology, whether it is their iPod, cell phone, or

computer; they are nearly continually utilizing some form of technology. Utilizing

technology as a educating apparatus to extend students desire to learn and understand

mathematics normally feeds off their desire to be engrained with technology, which can

result in way better learning and progressed execution on standardized tests.

Consolidating technology in mathematics classrooms empowers educators to

create effective collaborative learning encounters that support problem understanding and

adaptable thinking. With vital integration of both content-specific and content-neutral

technology, students and instructors can develop their learning together in authentic ways

that lift mathematics learning (Picha, 2018).

In the study in the Philippines conducted by Gorra and Bhati (2016) the most

observed positive results were instant messaging through chatting, lesson enquiry around

assignments, sending and getting e-mails, investigate through surfing the net including

information gathering by downloading records and sharing social encounters with others

through internet. Among the negative results recorded by students were accessing social

websites like face book, twitter etc. during class work, playing games, playing music,

answering and returning calls and downloading and using copyrighted material. It is

further observed that rate of positive and negative results change with the use of

technology. The positioning of positive and negative results vary in all the three cases of

utilize of technology - computer with internet, laptop with internet and mobile with

2
internet. From the frequency examination of positive, negative and net results of utilize of

technology in class room it is observed that students are most likely to have negative

results utilizing mobile with web. It is concluded that most students in state colleges and

colleges in Caraga region within the Philippines are likely to utilize technology in

classroom for the reason of positive results supporting the view that utilize of technology

makes a difference in improving learning related activities in classroom

The General purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of using technology

in math classroom on students’ mathematical skills. Through the information presented

on this paper the reader will know how technology affects the students mathematical

skills.
