Reported Speech: reporting verbs file

Accept
Dan: Would you like to come to my party on Saturday?
Liz:- I’d love to!
Liz accepted to go to Dan’s party on Saturday./Liz accepted Dan’s invitation.

Accuse
Lily: You lied to me!
Lily accused me of lying.

Advise
Paul: If I were you, I’d talk to her.
Paul advised me to talk to her./Paul advised (me) that I should talk to her.
Kristin: You shouldn’t go swimming directly after eating so much.
Kristin advised me against going swimming directly after eating.

Agree
Helen: Let’s go to the movies!
Rose: Yes, that’s a good idea.
Rose agreed to go to the movies.
Tim: I think we should celebrate the good news at a restaurant.
David: I think so too.
David agreed with Tim./David and Tim agreed on/about celebrating the good news at a
restaurant./David agreed that they should celebrate the good news at a restaurant.

Answer
Will: Which cities have you visited in Europe?
Lynn: I’ve been to Rome, Venice, Barcelona, Madrid, London and Paris.
Lynn answered that she had been to Rome, Venice, Barcelona, Madrid, London and Paris.

Apologise
Carol: Sorry I’m late.
Carol apologised for being late.

Ask
Mary: Could you please come a minute?
Mary asked me to go a minute.
Chris: Have you ever been to Colombia?
Chris asked me if I had ever been to Colombia.
Ann:- Where are you going?
Ann asked me where I was going.

Beg
Martin: Oh, please lend me your car, dad!
Martin begged his dad to lend him his car.
Complain
Mr. Brown: The service in this restaurant is terrible!
Mr. Brown complained (to the manager) about the terrible service in that restaurant./Mr. Brown
complained that the service in that restaurant was terrible.

Deny
Mrs. Phelps: The company has not acted irresponsibly in this matter.
Mrs. Phelps denied that the company had acted irresponsibly in that matter.
Johnny: It wasn’t me who broke the vase!
Johnny denied breaking the vase.

Explain
Dr. Anderson: Let me tell you about the risks of this operation…
Dr. Anderson explained the risks of the operation (to me).
Juliet: My full name is Juliet Avery, not Almery.
Juliet explained that her full name was Juliet Avery, not Almery.

Insist
Ross: Don’t you understand? This is the only way out. We have to give them the money.
Ross insisted on (our) giving them the money./Ross insisted that we should give them the
money./Ross insisted that we gave them the money.

Invite
Rick: Would you like to play football with us?
Rick invited me to play football with them.

Offer
John: Do you want some biscuits?
John offered me some biscuits.
Rachel: Don’t worry, I’ll help you carry those boxes.
Rachel offered to help me carry those boxes.

Persuade
Jim: Come on! Come with us! We’ll have a great time!
Alice: All right, all right. I’ll go.
Jim persuaded Alice to go to the cinema.

Promise
Karen: I’ll help you, you have my word.
Karen promised to help me./Karen promised that she would help me.

Recommend
Shop assistant: I believe you should buy a more powerful computer.
The shop assistant recommended buying a more powerful computer./The shop assistant
recommended (me) to buy a more powerful computer./The shop assistant recommended that I
should buy a more powerful computer./The shop assistant recommended that I bought a more
powerful computer.
Refuse
Joe: Please, tell me what Nina told you.
Ruth: I’m sorry. I can’t. I gave her my word.
Ruth refused to tell Joe what Nina had told her.
Sam: Would you like another piece of cake?
Max: Oh. No, thank you. I’m fine.
Max refused another piece of cake.

Remind
Peter: Don’t forget to call Richard.
Peter reminded me to call Richard./Peter reminded me that I had to call Richard.
Sophie: Yes we met before! Don’t you remember? At that conference in Washington?
Matt: Oh, yes! Now I remember!
Sophie reminded Matt that they had met before, at a conference in Washington.

Say
Ellen: I’m not feeling well.
Ellen said she wasn’t feeling well.

Suggest
Meg: How about going to Spain next summer?
Meg suggested going to Spain next summer./Meg suggested that we should go to Spain next
summer./Meg suggested that we went to Spain next summer.

Tell
Teacher: Don’t write on your desks!
The teacher told us not to write on our desks.
Fred: I’ve seen that film thousands of times.
Fred told me that he had seen that film thousands of times.

Thank
Lucy: Oh, thank you for the flowers! They are beautiful!
Lucy thanked me for the flowers.
Peter: Thank you guys! It means a lot to me that you are all here with me today!
Peter thanked us for being all there with him.

Warn
Policeman: Don’t drive so fast, the roads are really icy.
The policeman warned me against driving fast./The policeman warned me about the icy roads./The
policeman warned me not to drive so fast./ The policeman warned me that I shouldn’t drive so fast.
