Maths - Advanced Calculus Assignment Question

1. This document provides an assignment for an Advanced Calculus course with 10 problems to solve and submit by January 3rd, 2021. Late submissions will not be accepted and academic dishonesty will be dealt with severely. 2. The assignment includes problems involving functions of one and two variables, such as determining whether a function satisfies the intermediate value property or exists based on given conditions, analyzing continuity and differentiability, applying the mean value theorem, finding limits, and Taylor series expansions. 3. Students must show work to justify their answers for problems involving limits, existence of derivatives, and evaluating derivatives at points.

with severely.

1. Let f : [a, b] → R be twice differentiable and let f (a) = f (b) = 0 and f (c) > 0, where
c ∈ (a, b). Show that there exists ξ ∈ (a, b) such that f 00 (ξ) < 0.
2. State TRUE or FALSE giving proper justification for the following statement. There
exists a continuous function f : R → R2 such that f (cos n) = (n, n1 ) for all n ∈ N.
3. Show that there does not exist a non-constant continuous function f : R2 → R such that
f (x, y) = 5 for all (x, y) ∈ R2 with x2 + y 2 < 1.
4. Let f : [0, 4] → R be a thrice differentiable function in (0, 4) such that
f (0) = −1, f (1) = 2, f (3) = −2, f (4) = 4.
Let g(x) = f (x)f 0 (x)f 00 (x) + 4. Using the mean value theorem, find the minimum number
of distinct roots of g 0 (x) = 0.
5. Find the limit (if exist)
x7 y 8
lim .
(x,y)→(0,0) x21 + y 12
Justify your answer in the case of non-existence.
6. Let (
xy
2x2 +3y 2
, (x, y) 6= (0, 0)
f (x, y) =
0, (x, y) = (0, 0).
Discuss continuity of f (x, y) and existence of first order partial derivatives.
7. For the function
x2 tan−1 ( xy ) − y 2 tan−1 ( xy ), when x 6= 0, y 6= 0,

f (x, y) =
0, elsewhere.
Show that fxy (0, 0) 6= fyx (0, 0) and neither fxy nor fyx is continuous at (0, 0).
8. Consider the following function:
 2
(x + y 2 ) log(x2 + y 2 ), when x2 + y 2 =
6 0,
f (x, y) = 2 2
0, when x + y = 0.
Show that fxy (0, 0) = fyx (0, 0) although neither fxy nor fyx is continuous at (0, 0).

9. Consider the function f (x, y) = |xy|. Show that Taylor’s expansion about the point
(x, x) is not valid in any domain which includes the origin.
10. Find the expansion of sin(xy) in powers of (x − 1) and (y − π/2) up to and including third
degree terms.
