FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is defined as the process of sharing and conveying messages or

information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media,
and cultures. It can be a face-to-face interaction, a phone conversation, a group
discussion, a meeting or interview, a class recitation and many others.

Why does communication important?

 It is essential to human life without it we cannot function properly.

 The primary way to communicate is through ORAL COMMUNICATION.

 Communication includes LANGUAGE.

 Understanding communication particularly oral communication helps us become

MORE COMPETENT IN COMMUNICATION.

Why effective communication matters?

 By learning about communication- its nature, process, elements, types, and

more- we are able to improve our ability to communicate.

 Interaction is not possible without communication. We cannot interact to others if

we will not learn how to express ourselves and communicate properly.

 Communication is also considered as one of the important skill of a leader. One

of the most common traits of effective leaders throughout history is the ability to
communicate well to their subordinates.

NATURE OF COMMUNICATION

 Communication is a process.

 Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the
receiver).

 Communication can be expressed through words (verbal), actions, (nonverbal),

or both at the same time.

ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION

1. SPEAKER – the source of information or message

2. MESSAGE – the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in

words or in actions.

3. ENCODING – the process of converting the message into words, actions, or

other forms that the speaker understands.
4. CHANNEL – the medium, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or
nonverbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed.

5. DECODING – the process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker

by the receiver.

6. RECEIVER – the recipient of the message.

7. FEEDBACK – the reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver.

8. CONTEXT – the environment where communication takes place.

9. BARRIER – the factors that affect the flow of communication.

MODELS OF COMMUNICATION

1. Shannon-Weaver Model
 It was created by Claude Elwood Shannon in 1948 when he wrote an article “A
Mathematical Theory of Communication” in Bell System Technical Journal with
Warren Weaver.
 It is considered as the mother of all communication models.

 A linear or one-way process consisting of five elements: A SOURCE, A

TRANSMITTER, A CHANNEL, A RECEIVER AND A DESTINATION.

 It has been criticized for missing one essential element in communication

process: FEEDBACK

2. Transactional Model
 A two-way process with the inclusion of feedback as one element.

 This model is more interactive.

 There is a collaborative exchange of messages communicators with the aim of

understanding each other.

FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

1. CONTROL – functions to control behavior

2. SOCIAL INTERACTION – It allows individuals to interact with others.

3. MOTIVATION – It motivates and encourages to live better.

4. EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION – it facilitates people’s expression of their feelings

and emotions.

5. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION – Communication functions to convey

information.
