CHAPTER 2

The Demands of Society from The teachers as a Professional

Lesson 1 Activity

Answer the following questions

1. With the qualities of a professional in mind, cite some Filipino Traits that work against
the making of a true Filipino professional teacher.

Answer:

The following are the Filipino Traits working against the making of a true Filipino professional
teacher:

 CRAB MENTALITY. Involves pulling down anyone who achieves or is about to achieve

success greater than yours. It is a bad trait unfairly ascribed to Filipinos and considered
a formidable obstacle to their success. A professional teacher will have co-workers, and
as a professional, you might compete at some point but the important thing is to strive
without making others suffer.
 PROCASTINATION. Is the act of unnecessarily postponing decisions or actions. For
example, if someone has a week to finish an assignment, but they keep postponing it
until right before the deadline, despite the fact that they intended to work on it earlier,
that person is procrastinating. “Why do it now if you can do this tomorrow?, this is a very
dangerous phrase. A professional teacher has more tasks to do that should be finished
as soon as possible. A true professional does it earlier if possible.
 BAHALA NA HABIT. Filipinos usually say “Bahala na” when they are unable to decide
their next course of action or when they have no idea what will happen next. They say
this phrase as if all they want is to go with the flow, not minding what the outcome might
be.This trait shows when things get complicated and the person just completely give up
and say “bahala na” or translate to “come what may”. As a professional teacher,
complicated things should still be handled as tasks are all important. There is always a
way to finish a work, that’s how a professional works.
 NINGAS COGON. Ningas-cogon is a Filipino term for the tendency of individuals to start
a new task with much enthusiasm, only to stop working on it entirely soon after. It literally
means the burning of cogon grass, which burns brightly only during the few seconds
after it was lit. This shows when a person is just energetic and excited at the beginning
and eventually loses interest sooner or later. A professional teacher should become
enthusiastic all throughout the project or tasks.
 FILIPINO TIME. Filipino time means being minutes to hours late compared to the
standard time. Becoming late is almost normal among Filipinos which is not a good
thing. A professional teacher must become a good example to the students by being
punctual.
2. Realizing society’s demand from teachers, do you agree with at least four-year
academic preparation of professional teachers? Explain briefly your answer

Answer:
Yes, because the four-year preparation serves as their training grounds in order to acquire an
adequate knowledge and enhance their skills as the can apply in the actual teaching, however
they have to continue learning, as they say “Once a teacher, forever a student”. To be a great
and a professional teacher, there is so much more that they can learn to best support their
students like embracing new innovations, technologies and practices that can improve student
outcomes. A professional teacher has always room to grow and improve as an educator,
whether it’s through programs like workshop, seminars, fellowship or other professional
development opportunities. Educators should find ways to continue their learning that will give
them the skills and confidence they need to help all their future students achieve success.
