INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

30%

(Due: 1st September 2021)

Instructions:

1) Based on Topic 5 on Philosophical Roots of Education, each student is required to


produce an individual write-up on their own personal philosophy of teaching, a self-
reflective statement of your beliefs about teaching and learning.

2) General guidelines:

- Use a narrative, first person approach.


- Use present tense.
- Be specific and brief.
- Use Arial 11, 1.5 spacing.
- Length of your essay: 3-5 pages

3) Your write-up should include these things:

Introduction:

- Definition of philosophy and differences between general philosophy and


teaching philosophy.
- The importance of education, and the importance of philosophy in education.
- Your own understanding about philosophy of teaching.
- Your own belief about what makes a good teaching.

Contents:

- A discussion of your teaching methods (How do you implement your definition of


good teaching, how do you vary your approach, how do you deal with students
who struggle)
- A discussion of your evaluation and assessment methods and a description of how
they support your definition of good teaching. (What is the meaning of your
teaching philosophy to your students? How do you know your teaching is
effective?)

- A description of your students, including their background and interests, and their
most important learning goals. Then, describe your challenges in dealing with
them. (How do you motivate, support and challenge your students)
- A description of your teaching goals, with what content, skills or values should
students leave your classroom? What are your goals and plan for improving your
own teaching? What are some present challenges to overcome in order to
achieve your goals?

Conclusion

- An overall discussion about how will you continue growing as a teacher, and how
will you maintain and revise your own personal statement of teaching philosophy?

Teaching Philosophies - 8 marks

Writing components - 6 marks

Quality of information - 6 marks

Structure & Organisation - 4 marks

Grammar - 6 marks

Total - 30 marks
