2. Why is it important to develop a holistic point of view in dealing with life’s problems
and situations?

It is critical to develop a holistic perspective when dealing with life's problems and
situations because it motivates us to be aware of our actions and their impact on the

decisions we make, and it enables us to be a part of the ongoing process of change.

Guide Questions:

1. Etymologically, what does the word Philosophy mean?

2. What are the four things considered in Philosophy?
3. What are the branches of philosophy?
4. What is the importance of studying philosophy?

“What is philosophy?’’

Have you ever met a person who questions your beliefs? Whom shake your mind?
Or, someone made you think critically? Because I have. When I was in junior high school
there is someone who paid a visit in our classroom and encourages us to enroll in their
university through the process, she asks about our beliefs such as “Do you believe in
God?” “Does God really exist?” All of us confidently say yes but then, that’s where
everything starts to get questioned until we gave up nothing left to defend our answer.
Then, we ask her why she doesn’t seem to agree, but she didn’t give us the exact answer,
but made us to listen to her goodbyes where she said she’s a teacher in Philosophy and
if we want to know the answer we should go enroll in their university and find her. But
what is philosophy? Why does she question our beliefs through her understanding of
philosophy?
The word "philosophy" is derived from the Greek word "Philosophia," which
combines the words "Philo" and "Sophia," which means "love of" and "knowledge,"
respectively. Philosophy is etymologically meaning love of wisdom or love of knowledge
since the root word for “Philo” is “philia” where a person calling himself a philosopher finds
himself benefiting from the act of philosophy, the act of gaining wisdom. It is the study or
the creation of theories about fundamental concepts such as the nature of existence,
knowledge, and thought, as well as how people should live. Through philosophy, we try
to understand the mysteries of existence and reality. It aims to understand the essence
of truth and knowledge, as well as what is of basic value and significance in life. It also
looks at the human-nature relationship as well as the individual-society relationship. The
reason lies there, why the teacher in Philosophy asked about the existence of God, it was
because she studied in Philosophy. Her learnings about the basic concepts such as
existence, knowledge, right and wrong, reasoning, and the worth of things we're used to
answering fundamental questions that she asked for us to put ourselves in deep thought
concerning the nature of the universe and ourselves. To put it another way, she let us
think deeply to think about Philosophy. Along with philosophy are the things that need to
be considered: scientific approach, natural light of reason, the study of all things, and first
cause or highest principle. In addition to these are metaphysics, epistemology,
aesthetics, ethics, and logic or the 5 branches of philosophy. This principle as well as those
branches helps to understand the foundations of educational philosophies, it attempts
to clarify the meaning of vague words and concepts and to bring together the sciences
to fully explain the human mind and the world.
In essence, philosophy guides the analysis of concepts, definitions, arguments,
and problems. It improves our ability to organize concepts and problems, deal with
valuation issues, and obtain important information from large amounts of data. The
teacher who visited us and ask about our beliefs, introduce us to how great Philosophy
is. Through Philosophy, we can discover the truth, no matter where or what it is, it also
teaches us how to live our lives more effectively, to have a better understanding of our
own perspectives, considering advantages and disadvantages. And most importantly,
Philosophy improves our ability to think and reason to come up with our choices and be
aware of their consequences. We should examine our lives to live, discover what we
really want, and live with it because just like what Socrates said “The unexamined life is
not worth living.”

“Blue Magic”

Gifting is an art to cherish any event, relationship, or special occasion in one's

life with a gift to make one feel special. And we humans love giving gifts whether it's a
birthday, valentine's or Christmas.

December, the last month of the year, Christmas is coming, everyone is so busy
preparing things while I am not. My little old self is so eager to visit the mall and do
window shopping, yes, I am that callow, even without buying, I am contented to see
things, but unfortunately, my mother is not fond of the mall opposite of my aunt. Then,
my aunt planned to visit the mall with her 2 children, which are my cousins to buy gifts,
I asked my mother if I can join them and luckily, She said yes, I hardly knew that that
day would always be my worst Christmas week. The mall is crowded with buyers busy
picking gifts for their loved ones. Because auntie also likes every stall and every store in
the mall, we run, we stop by until we reach the Blue Magic Gift Shop. This colorful store
has won the heart of Filipinos through its wide range of gift items claimed by Blue Magic
Gift shop since it is also their best interest to uplift the art of gift-giving as a part of the
Filipino culture of celebration, warmth, generosity, and LOVE. Upon entering the shop
there were so many buyers inside, there were kids so fond of stuff toys just like me, but
slightly different from others because I don’t just touch everything that caught my
attention because my aunt was so strict, she always reminds me not to touch things
because I might break it and we will pay. There are small or life-sized teddy bears, paired
with a heart-shaped pillow in all its bright red, fuzzy glory, Blue Magic also had those
magic pens and sparkly pens including little toys or stuffed animals that would make
great Christmas or birthday presents. While I was looking around at the displayed toys
a child was running around from behind me that hit a good toy made of wood with a
stuffed toy inside since, the toy is at the center, it was blocking the path. I picked it up
to put it back on the shelves, but staff came and returned it to the shelves himself. After
that my aunt asked us to leave so we went out with her, but we had not gone far when
the security guard of the store chased us to go back and pay for the broken toy, it was
the staff who put the toy back on the shelves before, he said we should pay for the toy
since I picked it up. I was blamed for something I didn’t even do; I was left with no choice
but to ask my aunt to pay for it first as I am still a child. There it was, they only look at
a partial point of view, they didn’t even check the CCTV record to prove that the broken
toy was not my fault, but because I am a child who is still not aware of possibilities, I
didn’t even get to fight for myself. Then we got home, my senses are back, I got to fully
understand what really happened then I told everything to my aunt, but since everything
is done, I have left nothing but debt to pay. Then I thought what if my mom was the one
with me, she would ask me first if I broke that toy. She would consider my side, even
we end up still paying because that's what a mom does. She would look at the holistic
perspective than a partial point of view.

Since then, I learned from adults not to be impulsive and be a holistic person to
put everything into consideration so that everything will be compromised. We should
not jump or arrive at any conclusion without thinking and investigating thoroughly.
After all, we are all innocent until proven guilty.

What I can do? (Assessment)

Quiz #1
Directions: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is wrong with the word or
words that make it incorrect. (10 minutes)
1. A holistic view helps us understand a situation from different vantage points so we
can see it more partially. False
2. People tend to apply analytical perspective when looking at problems or
situations. True
3. Holistic thinking refers to a perspective that considers small-scale patterns in
systems. False
4. An individual uses a partial point of view when he/she looks at only a limited
number of aspects of the given problem or situation. True
5. A holistic perspective cannot enable a person to step back and consider the
general aspects of a certain problem. False
Quiz # 2
Directions: Read the sample scenarios below and answer the questions that follow:

Scenario 1: A teacher scolds Student A after Student B accused him of stealing

her pencil case. However, the teacher only listened to the story of Student B, and
not to Student A, before deciding to scold the student

Scenario 2: The teacher listens first to both stories of her two arguing students
before making any conclusion about the issue.

Guide Questions:
1. Which of the two scenarios applies a partial point of view? Why?
The scenario 1 applies a partial point of view since the teacher only listen
to the accusation of Student B without listening to Student A to find out the truth.

2. Which one exhibits a holistic point of view? Why?

The scenario 2 exhibits a holistic point of view because the teacher listens
first to both sides before jumping to any conclusions and doing action about the
problem.
3. Based on the given scenario how would you differentiate a partial point of view
from a holistic point of view?
A partial point of view only considers one part of the situation or focuses on
specific aspects while a holistic point of view looks at the big picture or looking at
something as a whole when describing and analyzing a situation or problem
before drawing any conclusions.
