Q.1 Answer and/or justify whether the statement is true or false: 5 CO1
(a) Symmetrical component analysis is useful only if original impedance matrix is symmetric.
(b) If a star-star connected transformer has XT as leakage reactance and ZX and ZY as neutral
grounding impedances, what will be its zero sequence impedance?
(c) The system impedance of a 500 MVA, 66kV system is 0.1 p.u. What is its fault MVA?
(d) In a system, at what point the negative sequence voltage is maximum?
(e) A DY11 transformer is supplied by negative sequence voltages. What will be the phase
relation between primary and secondary voltages?
Q.2 Develop the sequence network connections for the fault shown in fig. 1. Phases ‘b’ and ‘c’ are 5 CO1
grounded and phase ‘a’ is grounded through an impedance Zf. Also find expression for current
in phase ‘b’.

Q.3 The equation given below describes the voltage drop in two transposed 3-ph lines running 5 CO1
parallel to each other.
𝛥𝑉𝑎1 0.45 0.15 0.15 0.12 0.12 0.12 𝐼𝑎1
𝛥𝑉𝑏1 0.15 0.45 0.15 0.12 0.12 0.12 𝐼𝑏1

𝛥𝑉𝑎2 0.12 0.12 0.12 0.45 0.15 0.15 𝐼𝑎2
𝛥𝑉𝑏2 0.12 0.12 0.12 0.15 0.045 0.15 𝐼𝑏2
[ 𝛥𝑉𝑐2 ] [ 0.12 0.12 0.12 0.15 0.15 0.45] [ 𝐼𝑐2 ]
Calculate the self and mutual zero sequence impedances of the system i.e., compute Z011, Z012,
0 0 0 0
Z021 and Z022 in the following equations. Where, 𝛥𝑉𝑎1 , 𝛥𝑉𝑎2 , 𝐼𝑎1 and 𝐼𝑎2 are the zero-sequence
voltage drops and currents for the two lines respectively. (where subscript numerical shows line
number and superscript number shows sequence component).
0 0 0
𝛥𝑉𝑎1 = 𝑍011 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝑍012 𝐼𝑎2
0 0 0
𝛥𝑉𝑎2 = 𝑍021 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝑍022 𝐼𝑎2
Q.4 The single line diagram given below is a balanced power system and having voltage magnitude 5 CO2
at the generator internal bus is constant as 1.0 pu. Reactances of different components in the
system in pu are given in Fig.2. Infinite bus having voltage magnitude as 1.0 pu. A 3-ph fault
occurs at the middle of line-2. Find out the ratio of maximum real power that can be transferred
during the pre-fault condition to the maximum real power that can be transferred under the
faulted condition.
Fig. 2.
Q.5 The figure given below shows a generator supplies a group of identical motors and the motors 5 CO2
are rated at 500V, 90% efficiency at full load unity power factor with sum of their ratings being
10 MW. The motors are sharing equally a load of 8 MW at rated voltage, 0.8 pf lagging and
90% efficiency when an LG fault occurs on the low voltage side of the transformer. Draw the
complete sequence networks including the effect of pre-fault current to simulate the fault. The
group of motors can be treated as a single equivalent motor. Calculate the sub transient line
currents in all parts of the system with pre-fault current ignored.
