Case Study

The document summarizes some of the biggest data breaches that occurred in 2020, including breaches at Twitter, Nintendo, Marriott, and MGM Grand. The Twitter breach was a result of a phone spear-phishing attack that misled employees, while the Nintendo breach compromised additional user accounts and passwords. The Marriott breach exposed personal details like contact information, loyalty accounts, and demographics of millions of customers. Similarly, MGM Grand reported a breach involving around 10.6 million customer records from their resorts. The document recommends strengthening defenses against such breaches by training employees, implementing strong authentication and regular password changes, updating software regularly, and using tools that check for necessary patches.

nes-in-2020/

COMPANY INVOLVED: Twitter, Nintendo, Marriott, MGM Grand.

I.Summary

The pandemic situation has pushed the organizations and businesses to make
transitions in their working format by adopting remote working, using digital tools, etc.
and hence accelerated the technology adoption.

Twitter data breach

This attack relied on a significant and concerted attempt to mislead certain employees
and exploit human vulnerabilities to gain access to our internal systems.
In July this year, the popular microblogging platform came under cyber attack through a
phone spear-phishing attack.

Nintendo Data Breach

According to sources, the additional Nintendo Network ID (NNID) accounts that have
been breached have had their passwords reset, and the relevant users had been
contacted directly.

Marriott Data Breach

The information included contact details like name, mailing address, email address, and
phone number, 'as well as loyalty account information, and additional personal details
like company, gender, and birthday day and month, partnerships and affiliations and
other such.

MGM Grand Data Breach

In February, MGM confirmed data breach of around 10.6 million consumers who stayed
at MGM resorts.

IV.Reccomendation

Employee training should be your first line of defense against a data breach. Most of all
malware is delivered through email attachments. Phishing can’t be done away with, but
it can be combatted with employee training. Strong authentication, you need to ensure
regular periodic password changes are taking place, and be sure to implement 2-factor
authentication. Update software regularly. Professionals recommend keeping all application
software and operating systems updated regularly. Install patches whenever available. Your
network is vulnerable when programs aren’t patched and updated regularly. Microsoft now has a
product called Baseline Security Analyzer that can regularly check to ensure all programs are
patched and up to date. This is a fairly easy and cost-effective way to strengthen your network and
stop attacks before they happen.
