For each question draw out the path traveled and use the appropriate method to calculate distance
and displacement.

1. Joey drives his Skidoo 7 kilometres north. He stops for lunch and then drives 5 kilometres east.
What distance did he cover? What was his displacement?

2. Anthony walks 1 km east to the pizza place for lunch. He then walks 2 km west to the library.
Anthony then walks 1 km east again. What distance did he cover? What was his displacement?

3. Neil pogo sticks to his science class. He travels 8 m east the 4 m north. What distance did he

4. Alex goes cruising on his dirt bike on a long, straight dirt road. He rides 700 meters north, 300
meters south, 400 m meters north, 600 meters south, 1200 meters south, and finally 1000 meters
north. What distance did he cover? What was his displacement?
5. On his fishing trip Justin takes the boat 12 km south. The fish aren’t biting so he goes 4 km
west. He follows a school of fish 1 km north. What distance did he cover? What was his

6. Preston goes on a camel safari in Africa. They he travels 5 km north, then 3 km east and then 1
km north again. What distance did he cover? What was his displacement?

7. Amy rents a private jet for the weekend. She flies 400 km north to New York, then flies 1200
km south to Atlanta, then 600 km south to Miami. What distance did she cover? What was her
displacement?

8. Brandon buys a new jet ski. He goes 6 km north from the beach. He jumps wakes for 4 km to
the east. Then chases a boat 10 km north. He then travels 4 km west. What distance did he cover?
What was his displacement?
