PRESENT CONTINUOUS / PRESENT PROGRESSIVE – Using ING

Present Continuous or Present Progressive is an action that usually a subject does right now or at
the moment.

Gerund = _____ING.

Grammar Structure

Subject/pronoun + Verb to Be (Am-Is-Are) + Main Verb-ING + Complement.

I am working.
You are playing.
He is writing.
She is driving.
It is running.
We are buying.
They are fixing.

Exceptions:

 Verbs finish in Consonant + E = Lose the E = ____ING.


Write – Writing.
Drive – Driving.
Have – Having.
Take – Taking.
Like – Liking.
Love – Loving.

See - Seeing
Be = Being.

 Short verbs (One syllable) consonant + vowel + consonant = ___double last consonant +
ING.
Run - Running
Win - Winning
Cut - Cutting
Get - Getting
Put - Putting
Dig – Digging
Stop – Stopping
Shop – Shopping
 Verbs finish in W – X – Y = they don’t change.
Show - Showing
Draw – Drawing

Fix - Fixing
Mix - Mixing

Buy - Buying
Play - Playing
Study – Studying
Cry - Crying

Grammar Structure

 Present Simple: I work in the office.


Present Continuous:
+) I am working in the office.
-) I am not working in the office.
?) Am I working in the office?
A/ Yes, I am – I am not.

 Present Simple: Michelle writes a novel.


Present Continuous:
+) Michelle is writing a novel.
-) Michelle is not writing a novel.
?) Is Michelle writing a novel?
A/ Yes, she is – she is not.

 Present Simple: The kids run in the marathon.


Present Continuous:
+) They are running in the marathon.
-) They are not running in the marathon.
?) Are they running in the marathon?
A/ Yes, they are – they aren’t.

 Present Simple: Matt studies English.


Present Continuous:
+) Matt is studying English.
-) Matt is not studying English.
?) Is Matt studying English?
A/ Yes, he is – he is not.

Present Continuous:
+) Mike is being humble.
-) Mike is not being humble.

A/ Yes, he is – he is not.

 Present Simple: Susie lies to the doctor.


Present Continuous:
+) Susie is lying to the doctor.
-) Susie is not lying to the doctor.
?) Is Susie Lying to the doctor?
A/ Yes, she is – she is not.

Lie = Lying
Die = Dying
