Why Do I Want to be a Teacher?
Being a teacher is and has been my dream my whole life. As far as I remember, when I
was a little girl, if someone asked me: what are you going to be when you grow up? I would
always answer: a teacher. Growing up in a country where you have to pay for your education, I
had no choice but to drop out of school. My dream of being an educator vanished, and I forgot
about it for years. Many years passed by and I came to the United States. After coming to the
United States, all I wanted to do was work to survive and also to make some money to help my
family back home in my country. Later on, I got married and had a family. However, when my
girls were growing up, I went back to school and got my GED certificate. From that time until
now I have been in school on and off. In my long life, there are three main reasons why I want
to be a teacher: I love children, I believe in building a great relationship with them, and I want to
The main reason why I want to be a teacher is that I really love and enjoy being around
children. Most of my life I have been surrounded by them in one way or another. Back home
when I was in elementary school, I had a lot of friends of all ages. I really enjoyed playing with
everybody and had fun. Many times, I even skipped lunch because I was playing with my
friends. Then, When I was in middle school, I had a job which was taking care of three children.
Every day after school, I would go to my mother’s friend's house to take care of her children. I
remember that I was a very happy young girl because I was babysitting. That would make me so
happy because I loved to give them a bath, feed them and play with them. Later on, when I got
married I had three girls. My girls made me so happy and a busy mom. Then, in 2012 when I
began working in the CCSD, every day I was close to the children because I was working in the
cafeteria of the school. As you can see, I have been surrounded by children all my life. I just
love children because they are so curious and funny. I will make my teaching fun so they can
Another reason is because I think children learn better from a teacher who is
approachable and friendly. Building a relationship with the student is one of the most important
things in education. If children trust in the teacher, they will definitely do better academically. I
want them to make them feel that school is like a second home. I would like my children to feel
that school is a secure and safe place to be. Where they can have fun and at the same time learn
academically. I want them to make them feel that there is always someone on which they can
count on for the support that they will need. I will be supporting my students not only
academically, but also emotionally. Since I am working with children with social- emotional
behaviors, I know that there is a need to help children not only academically but caring and show
them love. Furthermore, I believe in teaching them manners because a lot of them do not have
that and it is important to respect and feel respect in order to learn. It seems that they are losing
them or never have them. I am a very loving, patient, and compassionate person. I like to listen
to the children to understand them better in their needs. I want to understand them in what they
are interested in, so teaching will be more enjoyable and they will be able to learn better.
The final reason is to make a great impact in the lives of the children. Making an impact
on the lives of the children is a long lasting memory. I would like to tell you that when I was in
elementary school the principal made a great impact in my life. I have been admiring him my
whole life. Many times when I am in the town where I was born, and have the opportunity to see
people that I know, my memories return to me. These memories are so clear as if it happened
yesterday. How could I forget about the one day when I was in third grade and my teacher was
absent. The principal of my elementary school filled in that day and he started teaching us. That
day, believe it or not, I learned more in one day than what I had learned in a week. I could see
how everybody was so engaged in his teaching lesson. From that day until now I still remember
how he taught the class. Definitely, he was a very knowledgeable and well-skilled person and
made a great impact in my life. I am hoping to have the same impact for my students and he did
for me.
In conclusion, being loving with children, building a relationship that lasts long and
making a great impact on them is something that will help them grow personally and
