Module 2: Science, Technology, and Nation-building

Objectives:
At the end of this module, the students should be able to:

 explain how early Filipinos applied scientific principles in their daily living;
 present government policies on science and technology and explain their
importance to the nation; and
 discuss the role of science and technology in nation-building.

What I Know?
Task: List down the things that you know about this topic.
1. Pre-colonial Period
2. Colonial Period
3. Post-Colonial Period
4. Government policies on science and technology
Self- check:
Answer the following questions concisely. (30 pts.)
1. What do you think are the major contributions of science and technology to
Philippine nation-building?

Science and technology's major contributions to Philippine nation-building

are linked to the country's socioeconomic progress and industrialization. Our
country's current capacity to produce local goods for domestic needs, as well as
in international scientific research publications, is very low. Science and
technology are critical to the growth and development of any country. Technology
plays a critical role in wealth creation, improving quality of life, and real economic
development and change in every culture. The development of new knowledge
and then the application of that knowledge to improve human well-being and
address societal problems is the foundation of how science and technology apply
to society.

2. What specific government policy do you like the most in terms of contributing to
the development of science and technology in the Philippines?

Science and technology are lagging in the Philippines. There are some
excellent ideas for dealing with this critical issue, but funding is not included in the

policies. For example, the S&T scholarship program is underfunded, and the
subject must be widely offered - but there is no funding for science teachers.
Politicians prefer to support physical infrastructure/construction projects,
overlooking the fact that investing in science and technology is more long-term and
yields greater returns than construction projects.

3. What do you think are the major contributions of the Philippines to the field of S
and T at present?

Filipinos have made significant contributions to science and technology.

Filipino scientists have, in fact, made inventions. A group of Filipino students
recently invented robotic toy cars. Another group of Filipinos was also able to
develop dengue testing kits. These are just a few of the inventions made by Filipino
scientists. Their inventions may not be large, but they can make a difference in
science and technology not only in the Philippines, but around the world.

4. What policies do you want the government to implement in the near future?

The role of "just" governments is to secure citizens' "unalienable"

rights, allowing society to "improve our way of life through science and technology."
Society and the free market invent and discover things as they see fit. The government
would waste money attempting to develop something that technology may not be
capable of doing right now. The government should focus on infrastructure
maintenance, defending our borders from foreign attacks, vetting immigrants,
enforcing immigration laws, and printing money. Aside from that, the government
should stay out of the way! In my opinion, the government lacks the expertise to
advance any meaningful scientific idea that would be beneficial. I believe that the best
scientific advances should be left to private enterprise. And cutting-edge companies
like Tesla are always looking for new and better ways to do things. For example,
batteries for their automobiles. I believe that if they can develop a battery that lasts
longer, charges faster, and has a longer life, the sale of electric vehicles will increase.
As a result, less polluting vehicles. More quickly and efficiently than any government
policy.
