Utilization of Mayana Ginger and Blue Ternate Extract Into WatercolorFINAL

This document discusses a study aimed at producing a watercolor paint made from natural plant extracts as a safer and more affordable alternative to commercial watercolors. The study will extract color from Mayana leaves, blue ternate flowers, and turmeric to make the watercolors. It will compare the quality of the natural watercolors to commercial ones in terms of opacity, granulation, staining, and cost. The goal is to create a watercolor without toxic chemicals that is safe for children but also affordable for most people. The study aims to help people gain the benefits of art while protecting their health and the environment.

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Art is a form of creative human expression, a way of enriching the human

experience. Art helps us to communicate ideas, generate our emotions, and to show

happenings in our daily lives. Watercolor painting is an art form that everyone loves.

From the little kids to the professional painters, watercolors are totally a hit. However,

watercolors contain certain chemicals that are harmful to every individual particularly the

children. Only some high-end watercolors are assured that harmful chemicals doesn’t

exist in their products yet the majority can barely afford these. The study is constructed

to help the people afford good quality of watercolor without dangerous materials in it in

an affordable price. The problem has opened the idea of making watercolor out of the

Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea)

extract that can be used by people in any age. Without the toxic chemicals and harmful

substances we will be able to gain happiness from everyone specially the children who

have a passion for art. Also, through this we can help save the earth.

Objective of the Study

The main objective of the study is to produce a watercolor out of the extract of

Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea).

The study specifically aims to:

1
1. To determine if the extract from the Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma

longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) are viable as an alternative in making

watercolor

2. To compare the quality of the watercolor made out of the Mayana(Coleus

blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) extract

from the commercially available watercolor in terms of:

a. Opacity

b. Granulation

c. Staining

3. To determine if there is a significant difference between the cost of

Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria

ternatea) watercolor with the commercial watercolor.

Hypothesis

Null:

1. The Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue

Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) extract will not be viable as an alternative in making

watercolor.

2. The quality of the watercolor made out of Mayana(Coleus blumei),

Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) from the

commercially available watercolor will not be satisfactory.

2
3. There will be no significant difference between the cost of Mayana(Coleus

blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) with the

commercial watercolor.

Significance of the Study

Watercolor painting is done by mostly every individual here on earth. Specially

children who are very fond of these and loves to paint their artworks using watercolors.

Sadly, some watercolors contain harmful chemicals and substances that are dangerous

to a child. And some of good quality watercolors are a little bit pricy. Hence, the

significance of the study is to create a watercolor that contains child-friendly substances

in an affordable price. Researchers aim to make the parents feel secured and safe that

their children are in good hands while expressing what they want through watercolor

painting.

3
Scope and Limitations

The scope of the study is on the opacity, fugitivity, granulation, staining, and cost.

The researchers study on using the Mayana(Coleus blumei), Turmeric(Curcuma longa),

and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) as an alternative in making watercolor by extracting

the leaves of Mayana(Coleus blumei), the flower of Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) and

the Turmeric(Curcuma longa). These organic ingredients are used as an alternative to

help the people afford good quality of watercolor without dangerous materials and

chemicals included. The study started on 28 of February 2019 at Sarmiento’s residence,

Apo Sandawa Homes, Phase 4, Blk. 8 Lot. 19, Kidapawan City.

Definition of Terms

Watercolor- a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments

suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor made out of Mayana (Coleus blumei),

Turmeric(Curcuma longa), and Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea) extract is the desired

output of the study.

Extract- is a substance made by extracting a part of a raw material, often by

using a solvent such as ethanol or water. Extracting will be the process to be used to

extract or redeem the color of the leaves of Mayana(Coleus blumei), the flower of Blue

Ternate(Clitoria ternatea), and the Turmeric(Curcuma longa) to be used as the materials

in making the watercolor.

4
Mayana(Coleus blumei)- is a fleshy, branched, erect, annual herb that grows

about 1 meter high. The leaves are variously colored and usually more or less hairy,

ovate, 5 to 10 centimeters long. Mayana acts as one of the independent variables in the

study and is used as a main ingredient in making the watercolor.

Turmeric(Curcuma longa)- is a flowering plant of the ginger family. The plant is a

perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant native to the Indian subcontinent and

Southeast Asia. Turmeric acts as one of the independent variables in the study and is

also one of the main ingredients used in making the watercolor.

Blue Ternate(Clitoria ternatea)- is a plant species belonging to the family

Fabaceae. In India, it is revered as a holy flower, used in different rituals. It acts as one

of the independent variables in the study and is also used as a main ingredient in

making the watercolor.

Related Legal Basis

The related legal basis of the foregoing study is on toxic substances and

hazardous and nuclear wastes. This is to prioritize government's thrust pursuant to

Republic Act No. 6969 known as Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes

Control Act of 1990. An act t6o control the toxic substances and hazardous and nuclear

wastes providing penalties for violations thereof, and for other purposes. It is the policy

of the State to regulate, restrict or prohibit the importation, manufacture, processing,

sale, distribution, use and disposal of chemical substances and mixtures that present

unreasonable risk and/or injury to health or the environment; to prohibit the entry, even

in transit, of hazardous and nuclear wastes and their disposal into the Philippine

territorial limits for whatever purpose; and to provide advancement and facilitate

research and studies on toxic chemicals.

The foregoing related legal basis has a significant bearing on the present study

because watercolor contains mixed substances or hazardous chemicals that may cause

an unreasonable risk or harm to health or the environment. These are regulated,

restricted, or prohibited by Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in

Congress. Hence, no more unregulated chemicals in watercolors will be used.

Mayana (Coleus blumei)

Mayana (Coleus blumei) grows fast and healthy in humid places. It is an herb

that is usually farmed as an ornament and has acer rubrum leaves which are dotched or

colored with mostly purple. Its leaves are blotched or colored, ovate, 5-10 cm long, with

toothed margins, furthermore, its leaves give mayana (Coleus blumei) its attractive color

giving people the idea to display varieties of them in their houses. ( zam398, & sndbox-

food coloring, and in Indian traditional medicine. (Schmidt, D., 2019, September 9)

Turmeric is the rhizome or underground stem of a ginger-like plant.  The whole

turmeric is a tuberous rhizome, with a rough, segmented skin. The rhizome is yellowish-
