Respiratory and Circulatory Systems
This module will HELP YOU to explain the mechanism on how the respiratory and circulatory
systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and molecules to and from the different parts of
the body.
Pre-Test
Directions: Read the questions carefully and write the letter of your answer
on the space provided. Use Capital Letters.
A. Food is digested.
_____ 3. What happens to your diaphragm and rib cage as you breathe in?
D. Nothing happens with the diaphragm and rib cage as I breathe in.
_____ 4. Which of the following types of circulation moves the blood through the tissues of the heart?
_____ 5. Starting from the superior vena cava, which of the following is the correct pathway of blood
from the heart to the lungs?

Looking Back
Have you ever notice your chest rise and fall as you
breathe deeply? What do you think is the reason for it?
To know the answer, perform the activity below.
Procedure:
1. Relax while sitting for 5 minutes.
2. After 5 minutes, observe your breathing pattern and get your pulse by placing your index
and middle fingers on your wrist.
3. Set the timer for 60 seconds, count the number of beats you feel.
4. Record your pulse rate in your notebook.
5. After getting your pulse rate, jog for exactly 1 minute and do 10 push-ups.
6. When you are done, repeat steps two to four then compare your records.
7. Answer the guide questions.
2
Module 1
Guide Questions:
1. What is your pulse rate before exercising?
___________________________________________________________________
2. How was your breathing pattern before and after the exercise?
___________________________________________________________________
3. How would you differentiate your pulse rates before and after the exercise? Refer to
your records.
___________________________________________________________________
4. Why does your pulse rate increase after exercising?
___________________________________________________________________
5. Which body system helps you to breathe?

Brief Introduction
Pharynx
The respiratory system consists of organs Nostril
in your body that enables us to breathe. When you
Larynx
breathe, air enters your body through your
external nares commonly called nostrils. Mouth
Then, air travels down into your throat, Bronchi
larynx or voice box, and trachea or windpipe Trachea
separates into two branching airways, Bronchioles
called bronchi. Each bronchus branches Lungs
off into smaller tubes called bronchioles
which end in the alveoli or the tiny air sacs. Diaphragm Alveoli
The Lungs as the main organ of the respiratory system, carry out the exchange of gases
as you breathe. As you inhale, your diaphragm muscle contracts, moves downward, and
expands the chest cavity. At the same time, your ribs move up and occupy more space and less
air pressure inside the lungs. As you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and returns to its original
place. The chest cavity and the ribs return to its original size allowing less space and the greater
air pressure inside the lungs.
The circulatory system also known as the body’s transport system is responsible for
transporting the nutritive fluid and waste materials throughout your body. This includes the heart,
blood, and blood vessels. The muscular pump that propels the blood throughout your body is
your heart. The blood which is the transporting medium in your body travels through your blood
vessels. It has three major types namely arteries, veins, and capillaries.
The circulatory system consists of three types of circulation that work together. The
pulmonary circulation refers to the movement of blood between the heart and the lungs. The
coronary circulation supplies the blood to the tissues of the heart. The systemic circulation
provides blood to and from the tissues of the body, excluding the lungs.
The respiratory system and the circulatory system work closely together for
supplying all the body cells with oxygen, and at the same time, for disposing of the waste
carbon dioxide from the cells.

Question:
11. How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work together? Explain briefly.
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
Respiratory and circulatory systems are essentially meant for each other.
The common function of each other could not be attained without the other system.
I learned that….
The primary organs of the respiratory system are the (1) _______________, which carry
out this exchange of gases as you breathe. Inhaling moves the diaphragm (2)
_______________and expands the (3) _______________. When you (4) _______________,
the diaphragm relaxes. The diaphragm and the ribs return to their original place.
The (5) _______________ system is the main transport system of the human body. It is
made up of the heart, blood, and blood vessels namely (6) _______________,
(7) _______________, and (8) _______________. These vessels bring oxygen-rich blood also
called (9) _______________ to the different tissues in the body and transport
(10) _______________ from the tissues to the lungs, in a process called circulation.
This is so great!
