Brief Introduction
Pharynx
The respiratory system consists of organs Nostril
in your body that enables us to breathe. When you
Larynx
breathe, air enters your body through your
external nares commonly called nostrils. Mouth
Then, air travels down into your throat, Bronchi
larynx or voice box, and trachea or windpipe Trachea
separates into two branching airways, Bronchioles
called bronchi. Each bronchus branches Lungs
off into smaller tubes called bronchioles
which end in the alveoli or the tiny air sacs. Diaphragm Alveoli

The Lungs as the main organ of the respiratory system, carry out the exchange of gases
as you breathe. As you inhale, your diaphragm muscle contracts, moves downward, and
expands the chest cavity. At the same time, your ribs move up and occupy more space and less
air pressure inside the lungs. As you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and returns to its original
place. The chest cavity and the ribs return to its original size allowing less space and the greater
air pressure inside the lungs.

The circulatory system also known as the body’s transport system is responsible for
transporting the nutritive fluid and waste materials throughout your body. This includes the heart,
blood, and blood vessels. The muscular pump that propels the blood throughout your body is
your heart. The blood which is the transporting medium in your body travels through your blood
vessels. It has three major types namely arteries, veins, and capillaries.

The circulatory system consists of three types of circulation that work together. The
pulmonary circulation refers to the movement of blood between the heart and the lungs. The
coronary circulation supplies the blood to the tissues of the heart. The systemic circulation
provides blood to and from the tissues of the body, excluding the lungs.

The respiratory system and the circulatory system work closely together for
supplying all the body cells with oxygen, and at the same time, for disposing of the waste
carbon dioxide from the cells.

discard the bottom part.
2. Carefully cut the drinking straw into halves.
3. Attach one small balloon to the end of each half straw and
tie it up using your rubber bands.
4. Make two holes in the cap of the plastic bottle, make sure that it is large enough and
apart from each other to fit the straw through it.
5. Insert the two straws with balloons into the holes of the plastic bottle cap.
6. Place the straws with balloons inside the bottle. Screw the cap tightly.
7. Stick the straws together using your rubber bands making an X-shape.
8. Carefully cut the neck of the larger balloon and stretch it around the open bottom of
your plastic bottle. Warp it tightly with the rubber bands.
9. Refer to figure 1 to see the finished constructed lung model.

Breath and Blood of My Body

The Heart is the muscular pump that propels the blood throughout your body.
Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium of the heart through the inferior vena cava and the
superior vena cava. Then, deoxygenated blood travels through the right ventricle and passes
through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, where the blood loses carbon dioxide and gains oxygen
which becomes oxygenated blood. The oxygenated blood is then carried back to the left atrium
of the heart via pulmonary veins. The blood is then pumped to the left ventricle, pumped next
through the aorta and to the rest of the body. This cycle is repeated. The respiratory system and
the circulatory system work closely together to make sure that your body receives enough oxygen,
and at the same time, removes the waste carbon dioxide from your cells.

Good Job! This is superb!

Remember I am so impressed with

your results and hope
you’ll keep continuing
these good marks until the
end of your adventure.

The Respiratory System is linked to breathing

when there is an exchange of gases. This system
includes the nostrils, sometimes mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, lungs, bronchi,
bronchioles, alveoli, and diaphragm.
7
Module 1
When you inhale, the diaphragm muscle contracts. When you exhale, the diaphragm muscle
relaxes. The diaphragm helps the air go in and out of the lungs where the gas exchange occurs.
The Circulatory system delivers nutrients throughout the body. This includes the heart, blood,
and blood vessels. There are three types of circulation that work together - pulmonary circulation,
coronary circulation, and systemic circulation.

Respiratory and circulatory systems are essentially meant for each other.
The common function of each other could not be attained without the other system.

Check Your Understanding

Directions: Supply the missing words to complete the following statements.

What Have I Learned?

I learned that….

The primary organs of the respiratory system are the (1) _______________, which carry
out this exchange of gases as you breathe. Inhaling moves the diaphragm (2)
_______________and expands the (3) _______________. When you (4) _______________,
the diaphragm relaxes. The diaphragm and the ribs return to their original place.

The (5) _______________ system is the main transport system of the human body. It is
