The Daily News Fierce Flash Floods!

Treegrove, a small town, was devastated by fierce flash floods. Last night's heavy downpour caused the River Grove to burst its banks, flooding the town and damaging over 500 homes. A Force 8 gale also caused property damage, blowing off some roofs. The emergency services quickly evacuated residents from the flooded homes. An expert warned that flood defenses need to be constructed along the river, as heavy rainfall will likely cause flooding again without protections.

FIERCE FLASH FLOODs!

By Umar Kusumo 11th Feb. 2018

Strong winds and torrential rain devastated more than five hundred homes in
Treegrove. The storm swept through the small town at midnight on February
10th.

The area has experienced heavier than usual rainfall this month. Last night’s
downpour caused the River Grove to burst its banks, which flooded the town.

The Force 8 gale caused damage to property. Some houses suffered broken
windows and others had roofs blown off.

The emergency services were on the scene quickly and evacuated people from
what was left of their homes.

Mrs Amisha Rasu, was heartbroken, ‘I have lost everything!’ she sobbed. ‘Even
my cat.’

The mayor of Treegrove, Adika Ackbar, helped to organize the evacuation. He

said that they had had awful floods in the past but nothing as bad as this.

The town of Groveside, up river, was luckier. It escaped th worst of the storm
and took in people from Treegrove. In the early hours of the morning, they opened
the community centre and people brought food and blankets for those who had lost
their homes. They provided shelter and hot food to help those rescued from the
floods.

For many years, people in Treegrove and other towns and village along the river
have campaigned for better flood defences. In the cold light of day, we saw what
was left of the town.

Dewi Malik, an expert in flooding, has monitored the levels of the River Grove
for many years. ‘In my opinion it was only a matter of time before the river was
full and burst its banks,’ she explained. ‘We have to prepare for this type of
weather and build flood defences. We can’t just keep hoping that it won’t rain too
much in the future.’

As usual’, she continued, ‘it comes down to money. Flood defences along long
stretches of river bank are expensive but we have to do something,’

Well, the people’s task in Treegrove now is to clean up their town. The Mayor
thinks it could take months, if not years, for the town to be rebuilt. How long will
people be without their homes? How long will it be before flood defences are built
to make sure this never happens again.?

On a happier note, Mrs Rasul was reunited with her cat.
