Sample of how to write a Safety Consideration in the Pre-Lab

1) Identify the danger – this will be the name of the chemical used (or produced), or the name of
the equipment being used.
2) State why the chemical/equipment is dangerous.
3) State what could get damaged / injured when using the chemical / equipment
4) Explain what precaution needs to be done in the use of the chemical / equipment
Good Example
This experiment will use Hydrochloric Acid (identify danger). The concentrations in this prac will be dilute;
however, HCl is corrosive (reason why chemical is dangerous). HCl can cause skin irritation (what could get
damaged / injured when using this chemical /equipment). As a safety precaution, you should wear
protective gloves to avoid contact with the skin. (Explanation of the precaution to take).

You need to write THREE Safety Considerations – DO NOT REPEAT dangers and precautions for the other 2
in your pre-lab.
DO NOT INCLUDE - TIEING LONG HAIR BACK, EATING/DRINKING IN THE LAB, CONSUMING CHEMICALS,
RUNNING IN THE LAB, WEARING COVERED SHOES as examples.
