Causes of Sleep Deprivation and Sleepiness
Causes of Sleep Deprivation and Sleepiness
INTRODUCTION
Sleep is critical to physical health and effective functioning of the immune system. It is also a key promoter of
emotional wellness and mental health, helping to beat back stress, depression, and anxiety [1].
College students are sleeping less and have more changes that are not getting enough sleep. On average, most
college students get 6-6.9 hours of sleep per night, and the college years are notoriously sleep-deprived due to an
overload of activities. Recent researches on college students and sleep indicates that insufficient sleep impacts the
health, moods, GWA and safety of a person.
Sleep deprivation is common among university students, and has been associated with poor academic
performance and physical dysfunction [2]. However, current literature has a narrow focus in regard to domains
tested; this study aims to investigate the level of sleep deprivation of BSCE 2B students in relation to their
academic performance at Marinduque State College AY: 2020-2021.
Conclusion
The college years are a time of critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. For many
individuals, this transition is associated with inadequate sleep and daytime sleepiness. Many
factors contribute to this, including the students’ own circadian physiology. Class times are often
scheduled without consideration of young adults’ circadian patterns. Inadequate sleep hygiene is
common, as students often use technology and substances that compromise sleep quality and
quantity. This chronic sleep deprivation may impair academic performance, mood regulation,
and driving safety. Students who attain sufficient sleep may still struggle with sleepiness due to
sleep disorders.
Further research is needed to not only determine how to best educate students about the
importance of sleep and the consequences of sleep deprivation, but also how to translate this
knowledge into practice. Electronic or web-based interventions may be economically feasible
and attractive to an electronically savvy demographic. Universities and colleges need to
understand, acknowledge, and publicize that policies and class schedules may have substantial
impacts on the sleep, learning, and health of their students. Investigation of new approaches to
promote good sleep and sleep habits could have significant public health impact and should be
prioritized.
SOP
The purpose of this study is to find out the level of sleep deprivation of BSCE 2B students in relation to their
academic performance at Marinduque State College AY: 2020-2021.
1. How do students performed during the 1 st academic year: 1st semester (2019-2020) and 2 nd academic year: 1st
semester (2020-2021) based on their academic performance (cumulative GPA)?
2. What is the difference between the level of sleeping time during 1 st academic year: 1st semester (2019-2020) and
2nd academic year: 1st semester (2020-2021)?
3. What are the factors affecting the quality of sleep during 1 st academic year: 1st semester (2019-2020) and 2 nd
academic year: 1st semester (2020-2021)?
4. Is there a significant difference between the level of sleep deprivation and the academic performance
(cumulative GPA)?
Null hypothesis
There is no significant difference between the level of sleep deprivation to the academic performance of the BSCE
2B Students.
