• Total Bovine population (Cattle, Buffalo, Mithun and Yak) is 303.76 Million in 2019
which shows an increase of 1.3% over the 19th census.
• The total number of cattle in the country is 193.46 million in 2019 showing an increase
of 1.3 % over previous Census.
• The Female Cattle (Cows population) is 145.91 million, increased by 18.6% over the
previous census (2012).
• Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) has been launched in December 2014 with an
objective for development and conservation of indigenous breeds through selective
breeding in the breeding tract and genetic upgradation of nondescript bovine
population.
• The scheme comprises of two components namely National Programme for
Bovine Breeding (NPBB) and National Mission on Bovine Productivity (NMBP).
• There is a decline of 6 % in the total Indigenous (both descript and non-descript)
Cattle population over the previous census. However, the pace of decline of
Indigenous Cattle population during 2012-2019 is much lesser as compared to 2007-
12 which was about 9%.
• The total poultry has increased by 16.8% and the total poultry is 851.81 million
during 2019.
• Over 45.8% increase in backyard poultry and total backyard poultry is 317.07 Million
in 2019.
• The commercial poultry has increased by 4.5% and the total commercial poultry is
534.74 million.
Backyard Poultry: Rearing of indigenous birds which are low input business with poor
performance.
Commercial Poultry: Rearing of improved breeds and it is high input business with high
output.
