Traditional vs. Online Education: Which Is Better?
Traditional vs. Online Education: Which Is Better?
American polymath Benjamin Franklin once said that, “An investment in knowledge pays the best
interest”.
When World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a global pandemic, it transformed all aspects of our
lives, and one area which has certainly seen considerable changes is the education sector. Schools and
universities around the world were forced to close their doors to prevent its spread; alternative
methods and technologies had to be adopted almost overnight. Thus, online learning has become an
urgent necessity, rather than an option.
We, students definitely know how this change impacts our way of learning. We can’t deny the fact that
we’ve all faced financial, emotional and physical challenges that put our education in jeopardy; we all
had new living arrangements that made learning difficult, and often lack of resources necessary to even
log onto class online and on-time because of the connection or device problems.
Currently, we are in our second year of college and second year as an online class student and we’ve all
noticed a lot of differences between traditional and online learning. Online learning is more efficient,
affordable, flexible, and safer in this time of pandemic. However, despite of the advantages, research
shows potential drawbacks that students may face if they are living in a developing country like us, they
will experience scarcity of another basic necessity for their education: access to affordable phone,
laptop, reliable internet connection, and good study environment.
Whereas, being in a physical classroom (Traditional education) is more beneficial because of the physical
interaction between students and instructors. Learning environment like school where there are no
distractions can help us focus more on our assignments, activities and get engaged in a course or
subject. The environment at home is different from the workspace students have at school. A classroom
provides a quiet academic place to do work while a household or a neighbor can be loud and cause
students to lose concentration or not even work at all.
Furthermore, the pandemic have enlighten us on how basic necessities such as internet, food, housing
and access are essential for students across the country to be able to access higher quality of education
and for students who are far from civilization, those who doesn't have internet access, and struggling to
live, this lack has only worsen their challenges in higher education. Lastly, researchers emphasized that
unsatisfied basic needs will have negative impact on student's educational path, and eventually, their
life.
In conclusion, I personally think that both traditional and online learning are effective, but in this time of
pandemic, it still depends on a certain country if they are capable of doing both kinds of education.
However, most of the countries have chosen to return face to face classes because they believe and I
also believe that as long as the students were out of school or out of their learning environment, the
more difficult it will be for the students to learn again for the reason that they are used to interactions
with other students and their teachers who inspires them to thrive harder and help them to finish their
studies and reach their goals in this life.
