Final Exam - Logic and Critical Thinking

This document discusses the issue of whether classes should be held online or face-to-face during the pandemic. While online classes reduce costs and keep students safe at home, they require expensive technology, make applied learning difficult, and are challenging for some students who struggle with self-discipline. Face-to-face classes allow for better practical learning and memory development but increase safety risks. The document argues that face-to-face classes should resume when possible with proper health protocols to ensure students receive an effective education and can apply their learning in reality.

I. INTRODUCTION

At all times, people have believed that education is the key to success. Parents
and guardians send their children to school to get a stable job and proper life in the
future once their children graduate from studying. They will reach the dreams of their
lives by investing in education. Although life is not easier, even they had finished their
studies but obtaining higher degrees have lots of opportunities to come in the near
future. However, this time has changed the perspective of education around the
pandemic. Pursuing either online class or face to face class becomes the most
prevalent issue in the Philippines. Many people have created debation to provide better
solutions and ideas for the students’ education and welfare. Some people choose the
online class for the protection and security of the students from the virus. On the other
side, people pursue face to face class because they get used to it from the beginning of
school life. They believe that they are other ways to provide the needs to avoid getting
infected by the virus by abiding the medical protocols. This paper is in favor of face to
face class.

II. BACKGROUND

If we pursue online class as a new medium of education, not all students can
able to absorb the new mode of education. Especially for the basic needs of online
classes such as a computer, laptop, and other gadgets and monthly payment for
internet accessibility because they are highly expensive. According to Miller (2017), it
has a level to be reached to become online ready. For instance, the internet connection
must be at the 40ms and below speed-test ping to comply with the school requirements
efficiently and use it conveniently. However, a faster internet connection is costing a lot
of money. If the students could not afford it, then they have to go outside and find some
places that are internet-accessible through the use of data connection from their mobile
phones. On the other hand, some people have chosen online classes because it
lessens the tuition fees and other expenditures such as rent, commuting fees, and the
like (Miller, B., 2017). Nevertheless, most students in the Philippines are struggling
regarding the internet connection and the gadgets because it keeps the prices rising
due to its demand in this pandemic. Most of the students stop enrolling in college, but
they work to earning money instead because of the struggles from the impact of the
pandemic.

People are investing in education to have a good future in life and climb
up the way of their living from poverty. As this crisis arises, most of the students have
taken online classes as an alternative option, especially for colleges. But in education,
we cannot rely on online to solve every circumstance in terms of practical courses such
as industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and medical courses. According to
Hughes (2020), there is a profound defect with online classes as it does not nurture
memory development. Students must undergo field, practical, and experimental
activities for those who are enrolled in difficult courses. They will appreciate more the
outcome with the efforts they do in practical projects than online. Due to the coronavirus
outbreak, conducting online classes make the students avoid contacting other people to
prevent spreading the virus. This kind of alternative suits the situation to have a safer
environment at home. However, according to Kamenetz (2020), Panicgogy is
articulating student’s practicalities. It means that a normal situation would change the
way how it is used to be like from a traditional class to an online class. It is not the same
as before for students to attend a synchronous session every day in an online
environment. Students will have a lot of responsibilities from their homes. The thing that
is only important to them is to comply to complete the assessments without applying the
learning behind from the course to themselves.

An online class is self-paced learning. It is the student who has the control of the
time and course matter they need in order to learn the lessons properly. It is different
from other learning strategies because it is up to the student how he will learn and
organize his time to learn it. Its time of learning is flexible. Generally, self-paced learning
is better for workaholic people. Those who have lots of obligations as they can not able
to attend school campus as they aim to just finish a degree. This kind of learning
method is not applicable for dawdlers (Self-Paced Online College Courses &
Degree Programs 2020). Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the online class has pursued
many countries, but most of the students have stopped going on online classes
because they cannot able to learn efficiently from the new method of learning. Some are
taking hard to adapt to the new normal of education. Most of all, students are having a
lack of motivation of how they will stand themselves in order to pass the courses with so
many distractions, obligations, and temptations around their home. Especially, not all
students are flexible and fast learners that can able to adapt to new normal. According
to Friedman (2020), 60% of the students told that they were comparatively ready for the
new mode of learning. The result is accordingly certain from the students who enrolled
in an online class. However, 64% of the participants had unveiled their struggles of how
can they get themselves in maintaining their concentration and self-discipline.

III. CONCLUSION

Taking an online class makes opportunities for a diverse learning experience. It

is easier to work from home since it is self-paced learning. It gives the flexibility and
convenience of time to comply with the assessments and coursework. However, the
online class has a limitation in terms of giving proper setting for the students compared
to a face-to-face class. Due to this pandemic, most of all aspects in the country has put
a limitation and shortcomings, especially in education. Our country altered to online
learning to continue the education of every student and for safety. But we cannot rely on
to make everything go through online because the outcome of the courses would be
uncertain to apply it into reality. It might affect society and even to a large scope of
living, especially in livelihood in the future. One of the important things in education is to
gain knowledge and experience then apply it in reality. Therefore, as soon as possible,
the government must find and create proper solutions and new protocols and
regulations for the students to continue studying in the proper learning environment.
