● They believed that different gods controlled
different aspects of every person's destiny on earth.
● As a result, many buildings and works of art
were created to please the different gods.
Greek Vase Painting

painting on vases.
● Vase painting reflects the conflict of the artist
between stylized formality and natural appearances.
● It also shows the application of laws of unity
and proportional relationship of design.
● Greek vase painting has three styles the black-
figured, the red-figured, and white background
styles.
Greek Sculpture
● Greece is blessed by land dominated by stone
which are usable for sculpture. Greek sculptors
portrayed figures of gods, goddesses, and
human beings.
The Archaic Period
● During this period, sculptors
created large, rigid, free-
standing figures very similar to
Egyptian sculpture.

● Three types of figures

prevailed--the standing kouros
(male nude figure), the
standing kore (clothed female
figure), and the Kroisos kouros
Peplos kore seated woman.
The Classical Period
● This was the "Golden Age of
Greece. The Greek sculptors were
interested with the human form
moving in space.
● Anatomical perfection was
important.
● Thus, ideal proportion of the

human form was given emphasis.

During this period, the famous
Greek sculptors were Phidias,
Praxiteles, Lysippus, and Myron.
Hellenistic Period
● Aesthetic beauty was less
important to the sculptors of this
period.
● The sculpture became more

naturalistic. Sculptors were

interested in showing emotion on
the face and ideal proportions of
the classical period.
Greek Architecture
● One of the Greeks' greatest contributions was in
architecture.
● Greek life was dominated by religion so it is not surprising
that the temples of ancient Greece were the biggest and
most beautiful.
● An example of this would be the Parthenon located on the
acropolis in Athens, Greece.
● This temple was dedicated to Athena, the goddess of
wisdom and patron goddess of Athens. Its principal
architects were Iktinos and Kallikrates.

Roman Triumphal Arches

● Roman Triumphal Arches were constructed across

the Roman Empire. These were used by the
Romans to celebrate a successful military
campaign.
Arch of Constantine
Aqueduct
● A series of round arches were
also used to construct bridges
and aqueducts.
● An aqueduct is a network of

channel used by the Romans to

bring water down out of the
mountains to be used in the
city.
● Gravitational flow and the use
