install an electrical/electronic device.

Warm-up: What is this?

Work in groups. Look at the slides and guess the words based on the clues.
Activity 1: Matching
Work individually. Look at the tables and match the steps with suitable devices (A-F) .

A. How to install a ceiling fan

B. How to install a light bulb
C. How to build a circuit with battery
D. How to install a water heater
E. How to install a bushing in the transformer
F. How to install a light bulb switch

Step 1: Gather the materials

Step 2: Install the switch

1 Step 3: Attach the extra third wire to the switch

Step 4: Check the light bulb

Step 5: Test your circuit

Step 1: Remove the blank bushing plates, using care not to damage the
gasket

2 Step 2: Locate the lead connector for the wire (at least 12 inches longer
than the bushing). Insert the wire up through the bushing

Step 3: Install and tighten the gasket and the top cap assembly

Step 4: Connect the leads inside tank of the transformer

HOW TO INSTALL A NEW LIGHT BULB

1.

Trying to wire a light in your home can be intimidating. After all, wiring involves
electricity, and electricity can be dangerous. However, by taking basic precautions
and understanding the basic working of a circuit and the wires involved, you can have
new fixtures wired and installed in your home in no time!
To do this, you need to prepare a new bulb, a screwdriver, some screws, some
wires and a voltage tester.

2.

To successfully set up a new light bulb, you need to cut power to your circuit. Switch
the breaker of your fuse-box so the fuse for the circuit supplying electricity to your
fixture reads “Off.” Next, clean the old fixture and the installation area. If the light you
are wiring is in the ceiling, you should clean any cobwebs and dust before attempting
to install your new fixture. The same is true for lights or switches in walls; a clean
work area will improve your ease of installation. And don’t forget to remove the old
fixture covering.

3.

To begin the installation, check for compatibility. In most cases, the mounting
hardware for your new fixture will fit the bracket that’s already installed. You’ll need to
hold the new light fixture up to the existing mounting bracket and compare fasteners and
size to make sure you don’t need to install a new mounting bracket. After that, you
connect the same colored wires. Twist the exposed ends of the wire together, and seal
it by screwing on a wiring cap. Finally, fasten your fixture in the mounting bracket with
appropriate screws using a screwdriver. During the operation, you should test the new
light to guarantee its quality by investigating how it works; or you can test the electric
current in case finding any trouble to the light.

Students’ Book

4.

First, test the electric current by using a voltage tester. Sometimes, over the course of
installation, a wire might be jostled or damaged in such a way as to compromise its
ability to transmit electricity to your new light. Second, create space to work.
Remember to give yourself more wires. If you are working with older wire, or if the
stripped part of the wire is difficult to work with, after you have cut power to the circuit
you are working on, you can strip more wire for greater ease of handling.
