Synthesis and Recrystallization of Dibenzalacetone: Experiment - 4

The document summarizes an experiment to synthesize dibenzalacetone through the reaction of benzaldehyde and acetone. It provides the amounts of reactants used, the crude and recrystallized product weights obtained, and calculations to determine the theoretical and percent actual yields. The limiting reagent was found to be acetone. The actual yield was 1.5401 g, 67.7% of the theoretical yield of 2.2727 g. The literature melting point of dibenzalacetone is 110-111°C.

Weight of the crude product (x): 2.78 g

Weight of the crude product used for recrystallization (y) : 1g

Weight of recrystallized product from y gram of crude product (z): 0.554 g

Limiting Reagent for yout reaction is Acetone

Reason:2 moles of benzaldehyde reacts with 1 mole of acetone in the reaction .We have
0.019811 moles of benzaldehyde .Thus theoretically ,it must react with 0.01981/2=0.009905
moles of acetone .However we only have 0.009758 moles of acetone.Hence, acetone is the
limiting reagent of the reaction . [2 Marks]

Theoretical yield (show calculations) = (No. of moles of the limiting reagent)*234.297 g/mole

=(No. of moles of acetone)*234.297 g/mol
