10 FILIPINO SCIENTISTS

1. Onofre D. Corpuz, Ph.D.

- Onofre Dizon Corpuz ONS (December 1,


1926 – March 23, 2013[2]) was a Filipino
academic, economist, and historian. He served
as the Secretary of Education of the Philippines
from 1968 to 1971 and was the 13th president of
the University of the Philippines System from
1975 to 1979. In 2004, he was named National
Scientist of the Philippines for his contributions
to Filipino scholarship particularly in areas of
economics, history, political science, and public
administration.

2. Raul V. Fabella

- Dr. Raul V. Fabella has earned many


distinctions. He was given the 1993 National
Social Science Award by the Philippine Social
Science Council, the 1993 UP President’s
Award for Outstanding Publications (Rawlsian-
Nash Solutions), and the 2002 International
Publication Award for “The Welfare and Political
Economy Dimensions of Private versus State
Enterprise.” Dr. Fabella was also cited as a UP
Diliman Most Outstanding Faculty Member from
1991-1993 and elected to the National
Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as Academician in 1995 in
recognition of his research on the Nash bargaining solution and the Olson
ratio.
3. Gelia T. Castillo, Ph.D.

- Dr. Gelia T. Castillo unearthed stories that speak


of the Filipino narrative. Through her research, she
paved the way for this narrative to be rewritten. Dr.
Castillo is recognized for her outstanding
contributions to agricultural social science resulting
in a body of knowledge about Philippine rural
society which has enabled the Filipino to better
understand the social conditions and dynamics of
agricultural and rural development.

4. Gregorio Y. Zara, D.Sc.

- Gregorio Zara (March 8, 1902–October 15,


1978) was a Filipino engineer physicist, and
scientist best known as the inventor of the
videophone, the first two-way electronic video
communicator, in 1955. All told, he patented 30
devices. His other inventions ranged from an
alcohol-powered airplane engine to a solar-
powered water heater and stove.

5. Fe Del Mundo, M.D.

- Dr. Fe del Mundo revolutionized Philippine


medicine, making major breakthroughs in
immunization and in the treatment of jaundice,
and providing healthcare to thousands of poor
families. Del Mundo pioneered numerous
innovations throughout her more than 70-year
medical career. A committed humanitarian, del
Mundo dedicated her life to the health of the
world’s children.
6. Teodoro A. Agoncillo, Litt.D.

- Teodoro A. Agoncillo, a renowned Filipino


historian and national scientist, was born in
Lemery, Batangas.Agoncillo started writing
history from the so-called Filipino point of
view and stand as the most prominent 20th
century Filipino historians to emerge during
the post-war period.Some of his other well-
known works include Revolt of the
Masses (1956), Malolos: the Crisis of the
Republic (1960), the Fateful Years (1965),
and History of the Filipino People (1960) which are all still being used as
textbooks in many schools.

7. Encarnacion A. Alzona, Ph.D.

- Encarnación A. Alzona (March 23, 1895 –


March 13, 2001) Dr. Alonza has the distinction
of the first woman Ph.D. in the Philippines.
She has practically received every
distinguished award in the country can
bestowed upon her: Apolinario Mabini
Centennial Award (1964), Rizal Centennial
Award (1961), Republic Cultural Heritage
Award for historical writing (1966) and Rizal
Pro Patria Medal of the Republic of the
Philippines (1971). A profile writer, some of her historical writings have
already become classics, particularly her A History of Education in the
Philipines. For her El Legado de Espana a Filipina, she received the Lone
Prize awarded by the Congress de Hispanistas de Filipinas in 1954.

8. Ernesto O. Domingo
- Ernesto Domingo is a Filipino scientist,
professor and one of the Philippines’ Most
Outstanding Physician who received countless
awards. Dr. Domingo is recognized for his
groundbreaking studies with the schistosoma
species, viral hepatitis, and liver disease. His
research led to pioneering a preventive solution
to liver cancer via immunization of newborns
against hepatitis-B. His work finds applications
in health care and immunology.
9. Perla D. Santos-Ocampo
- Dr. Perla Ocampo was an internationally
recognized pediatrician and child development
expert following her membership to the World
Health Organization (WHO) Expert Advisory
Panel on Maternal and Child Health from 1980 to
1982 and the Global Technical Advisory Group of
the WHO on the Control of Diarrheal Disease
Programme from 1987 to 1993. She is widely
recognized for her outstanding work and
accomplishments in the twin scourges of
diarrheal diseases and malnutrition that have
contributed in the elucidation of etiologic factors
and planning of control measures that reinforced international
recommendations in oral rehydration and nutritional management

10. Paulo C. Campos, M.D.


- Paulo C. Campos (July 27, 1921 – June 2,
2007) was a Filipino physician and educator
noted for his promotion of wider community
health care and his achievements in the field of
nuclear medicine for which he was dubbed as
"The Father of Nuclear Medicine in the
Philippines". As a health scientist, Dr. Campos
authored/co-authored 75 scientific publications
some of which were award winning. His
researches namely: (1) Observation on Some
Parameter of Insulin Action, (2) Cr-51 Tagged
Red Cell Studies, and (3) The Genetic Factor in
Endemic Goiter won First Prizes in Research Award. For his achievements in
research, the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science named
him Outstanding Scientist (Gregorio Y. Zara Award) in 1969 and is is credited
for establishing the first and best known Radioisotope Laboratory in the
country, the first Research Laboratory in the Department of Medicine,
University of the Philippines and the Thyroid Clinic of the UP-PGH Medical
Center.
