Lesson 5 - Evolution of Communication
COMMUNICATION
Purposive Communication
Evolution of Communication
◦ Life before is simple. Personal interaction was prevalent, and
communication was unencumbered. Letters would be written and sent
through “snail mail,” sometimes enclosing pictures developed from film
cameras of old. Long-distance telephone calls were a long-awaited weekly
occasion to catch up with parents, siblings, or in-laws.
◦ The internet was a thing of the future. We have now a fast-forward one
generation to the present wherein people have all sorts of electronic
communication technology e.g., social media, wireless messaging, the
internet, etc.
Textual Elements of Multimodal
Communication
◦ Emphasis is the importance or value given to a part of the text-based
content (bold, italicized, enlarged, etc.)
◦ Appropriateness is the suitability of the used text for a specific audience,
purpose, or event (font style).
◦ Proximity is the space or distance of the text elements in information
(spacing).
◦ Alignment is the positioning of the text on the page (left, center, right, or
justified).
Visual Elements of Multimodal
Communication
◦ Consistency is the firmness of the design. The design should be
consistent with its margins, typeface, typestyle, and colors, etc.

AUDIENCE
SEGMENTATION
Evolution of Communication
Audience segmentation
◦ Given the diversity of our audience, the communicator needs to critically
analyze them according to the following:
◦ Demographic Analysis
◦ Psychographic Analysis
◦ Geographic Analysis
Demographic Analysis
◦ This is a parsing of the population of the
target audience according to age,
gender, and racial composition.
◦ If the communicator’s objective is to
persuade and it is known that there will
be a unique demographic group for the
selected audience, it is easy for the
presenter to create a message that is
directed to the target group.
Psychographic Analysis
◦ This is an examination of people’s
behavior towards something.
◦ The communicator should understand
fully the mood or the attitude of the
audience about the information given to
them.
Geographic Analysis
◦ This encompasses an investigation of
the people’s physical location to
determine their cultural beliefs,
traditions, and values.
◦ The communicator may then frame the
message by using language appropriate
to the audience.
