Warm-up:
1. Represent the following quantities as integers.
10 degrees below zero Spend $12

Gain of 6 yards Earn $36

Profit of $145 12 feet below sea level

2. Draw and label a horizontal number line.


Graph the points: {-2, 6, 0, 1, -6}

Vocabulary: Link
Integer – any number from the set {…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …}.
Note: fractions and decimals are NOT integers.

Negative integer – less than zero. Positive integer –greater than zero.
Ex: -5, -8, -3, -2 Ex: 6, 3, 15, 1

Absolute value – a number’s distance from zero on the number line.


Ex:  9  9 , 0  0 , or 24  24

Opposite numbers or Additive inverse – a number that is the same


distance from zero on the number line, but on the other side of zero.
Ex: the opposite of 5 is -5. The opposite of -18 is 18
The additive inverse of -13 is 13. The additive inverse of 21 is -21.

Finding the opposite or additive inverse of a number


Opposites/Additive inverse – numbers that are the same distance (equidistant) from
zero on a number line, but on the other side of zero.
Find the opposites below.

Finding the absolute value of a number
