Mathematics in Modern World ULO1-d

The document discusses Polya's four-step problem solving strategy which includes: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) review the solution. It then provides examples of solving math word problems using this four-step approach. Specifically, it solves problems related to calculating the number of windows, bus mileage over multiple days and routes, posts needed for fences, and finding the least common number of tickets purchased by two people.

Polya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving Strategy

One of the foremost recent mathematicians to make a study of problem solving was George Polya
(1887-1985). The basic problem-solving strategy that he advocated consisted of the following four steps:

1. Understand the problem.

2. Devise a plan.

3. Carry out the plan.

4. Review the solution.

D. Solve the following problems applying Polya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving strategy.

1. In an apartment complex, there are 5 windows in each apartment, and 9 apartments in each floor.

How many windows are there on 8 floors?

Ans:

Given:

5 windows for each apartment

9 apartments each floor

8floors

first floor : 5 * 9 = 45

Then 45 * 8 = 360 windows

2. A bus route is 8 kilometers long. The bus does the route 6 times each day. How many miles will the

bus drive in 6 days?

Ans:

Given:

8km long route

6 times each day

6days

For 1 day : 6*8 = 48 kilometers

for 6 days : 48* 6 = 288 KM

Convert 288 km to mile

177.99 Miles approximately 178 miles

3. How many posts does it take to support a straight fence 200 meters long if a post is placed every 20

meters?

Ans:

Given:

200 Meters long Fence

Post every 20 meters

200 / 20 = 10 posts

4. How many posts does it take to support a fence around a square field measuring 200 meters on a
side if posts are placed every 20 meters?

Ans:

Given:

Square Field

200 meters each side

post every 20 meters

For 4 sides

200 * 4 = 800M

800M / 20 = 40 Posts

5. Chamy and Kleah went to an amusement park. They bought the same number of ride tickets, but

Kleah bought them in packs of 16 , and Chamy bought them in packs of 3. What is the smallest

possible number of tickets they each bought?

Ans:

Given:

Kleah bought them in packs of 16

Chamy bought them in packs of 3

Needed here is the Least common factor

Kleah( multiple of 16) = 16 , 32, 48 , 64

Champy ( multiple of 3) = 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36,39,42,45,48,51

There common factor is 48
