What is a semiconductor?
 A substance that conducts electricity is called a conductor
 A substance that does not conduct electricity is called an insulator.
 Semiconductors are substances with properties somewhere between
them.
Characterization through resistivity

Basic composition of semiconductors (1)
 The semiconductor family of materials includes,
1. Elemental semiconductors,
2. Compound semiconductors, and
3. Alloys.

7 EE-211- Electricity and Magnetism- Dr. Ahsan Sarwar Rana

Basic composition of semiconductors (2)
 Although these many numbers of semiconductors may seem large at
first, but they are not when considering elements in the periodic table.

Applications of semiconductor devices
 The vast majority of discrete devices and integrated circuits (ICs).
Including the central processing unit (CPU) in microcomputers and the
ignition module in modern automobiles, are made from Silicon.
 GaAs exhibiting superior electron transport properties and special
optical properties, is employed in a significant number of applications
ranging from laser diodes to high-speed ICs.

Purity
 When an impurity atoms called “dopants” are added in
semiconductors, their electrical conductivity can be increased.
 Usually dopants range from 1 atom per 108 to 103 atoms of
semiconductor material.
 Another way to change the electrical conductivity in semiconductors is
by increasing their temperature.
• Silicon becomes sufficiently conductive at 902 K or 629˚C.
