Objectives:

Materials:
 Magnifying glass, matchsticks, steel plate, steel table, thin bond paper
Procedure:
1. The experiment should be performed only under you teacher’s supervision. Also, keep a pail of water beside you
as you do the experiment.
2. Go to an area in your school where there is direct access to sunlight. Place a table where you can perform the
experiment.
3. Place the steel plate on the table. Put three matchsticks across the steel plate, approximately five cm apart from
each other.
4. Move the magnifying glass directly above the steel plate on the table. Make sure to expose the other side of the
magnifying glass to the Sun. You will notice a bright dot formed by the magnifying lens.
5. Notice that the bright dot will move as you move the magnifying glass.
6. Move the bright dot (by moving the magnifying glass) and focus it on the head of one matchstick. Wait for a
seconds and observe what happens.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the bright dot formed by the magnifying glass?
