Basic Tutoring Skills

1. English Proficiency

As a RareJob tutor, you must exhibit proficiencies in these areas:

 Grammar
 Pronunciation
 Fluency

★ Being proficient in English helps tutors be more effective in teaching the language.

2. Attitude

Follow these tips to create a fun learning environment for you and your student.

1. Be polite and respectful during the lesson.

Do's
Use the honorific -san when addressing the student
Always let the student finish talking before you say something.
Don'ts
 Avoid drinking and eating.
Avoid bringing up sensitive topics (e.g. World War II, religion, work details, family/relationships, same-sex
marriage, and politics).
2. Build rapport and make the student feel comfortable.

Do's
 Be cheerful and have fun!
 Share something interesting about yourself.
Take an interest in the student by asking a question or giving a comment based on the student's self-
introduction.
Don'ts
Avoid asking personal questions (e.g. age, work details, family, and relationships).
Avoid asking a lot of questions as if you are conducting an interview.

SAMPLE
Student: My name is Mitchy. I am an office worker in a manufacturing company. I like playing tennis
and cooking.
Tutor: Those are interesting hobbies, Mitchy-san. I also like cooking. What food do you usually
cook?
3. Be sensitive to your student’s needs and accommodate their requests.
Tips:

Observe the student’s cues and respond accordingly.

Example: When students are confused or when something is difficult to understand, they tend to pause
or use Japanese fillers like "etto" or "ano". Help them out by repeating the question at a much slower
pace or by simplifying it for them.
Always check if the student understood or has questions.
Example: You may ask "Is it clear?" to confirm the student's understanding.
Keep in mind your student's preferences and follow their requests during the lesson.
Example: You may review the student's lesson request found on the student's profile and/or the tutoring
notes.“Please correct my errors proactively.”; “Please keep self-introduction time short.”

3.Focus

Being focused during the lesson makes the experience more engaging for your student.

Tips:

1. Listen attentively to your student.

o Use verbal nods.
 Give appropriate responses to the student’s statements and responses.
o Saying "very good" after the student's introduction instead of acknowledging it.
 Avoid signs of uncertainty.
o Having dead-air during the lesson.
 Ask follow-up questions.
o Ask about the student’s interests and experiences.
o Share your opinions and own experiences.
Question: Aside from school meal programs, how else can the government ensure children’s health
and wellness?
Student: The government should also make policies to increase the students’ physical activities.
Tutor: That’s right, Mitchy-san. Do you have these policies in school? What are they?

4. Time Management

★ Japanese give importance to punctuality so always start and end the lesson on time.
Call the student exactly at the start time or at most 10 seconds before the lesson time.
Never end your class early nor go overtime for 1 minute.

5. Ability to Follow the Lesson Flow

6. Use of Chat Box

★ The chat box is used as a teaching aid during the lesson.

Different Uses of the Chat Box:

1. Providing the material

2. Giving definitions and corrections
o Always follow the correct format when sending corrections and definitions.
 Providing your feedback at the end of the lesson
o Feedback depends on the format prescribed in the material.
Note: When using the chat box, remember to follow the correct grammar rules, capitalization, spelling,
and punctuation.

Standard Tutoring Skills

1. Level Adjustment
2. Error Correction
3.Effective Explanation

promptly provide it to the student.
