New Paper on CO2 discharge published

Paper Title: Discharge of CO2 from large-diameter Orifices: Experimental Data and Data Review.

Authors: Henk W.M. Witlox, Jock Brown, Hamish Holt, Keith Armstong, Daniel Allason
Prepared for Presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers 2015 Spring Meeting,
11th Global Congress on Process Safety, Austin, Texas, April 26-29, 2015

Paper Synopsis
The second phase of the CO2PIPETRANS Joint Industry Project (JIP) aims to fill knowledge gaps
associated with the safe and reliable pipeline transport of CO2. This paper describes the experiments and
presents the results of a high-level data review of these experiments. This data review included
discharge data only (pressures, temperatures, flow rates). The review was carried by DNV GL Software
with the purpose of providing an initial assessment of the robustness of the data recorded. Phast
discharge models were used to provide a reference source and are shown to provide good agreement
with the empirical data obtained from the experiments. The above experimental data and results of the
data review have been made publicly available via the CO2PIPETRANS JIP.

Paper Availability
The paper will be available to download from the AIChE website after the 26-29 April event.

Upcoming Webinar: Guidance on performing transportation risk

analysis to be held on 26th May 2015
Performing transportation risk analysis can be a time-consuming and complex undertaking. We will be
hosting a webinar to explore and examine the challenges in conducting risk assessments of
transportation systems (e.g. pipelines) and how they can be addressed using Safeti. The webinar
previews new features and modelling that will be made available in Safeti 7.2.

The webinar will demonstrate to participants a systematic approach using case studies that ensure you
spend time reducing transportation risk rather than spending time producing numbers.

Learning objectives
• The challenges of transportation of hazardous materials
• Scoping a TRA
• Mobile transportation options
• Pipeline transportation
1
o Pipeline definition
o Case generation
o Consequence results
o Risk results
• How Safeti's systematic approach can be used in a progressive way to assess risks across large
transport distances

The webinar is complimentary. The webinar content will be presented twice to accommodate participants
from different time zones. Register and join at the most convenient time for you.
